Steve, Joe’s “ie” effect is pretty standard around baseball. Lazy. The “Meat” thing comes from Alex based on the fact that Pavano is just a huge slab of a guy, a big hunk of meat–that he took that liner off the noggin so well just adds to the legend.

I missed the basis for it – what was it?

I like Meat. That works pretty well, I think.

Cliff – Joe did it, not me. Torre has somewhat of his own “speak” when it comes to player’s names. Like calling “Jorge” Georgie, and calling Jeff Nelson “Nellie” – - – he seems to like the “ie” effect?

To each his own, of course, but “Pav”? Since when did chosing one sylable out of a guys last name count as a nickname. It works for Sheffield, because you get a word that’s good for some play (Iron Sheff, Sheff’s hats etc.), but Pav? That’s be like calling Jorge “Pos” what’s the point?
