Giambi Splits

Thanks to David Pinto’s Day by Day Database, you can have lots of fun looking at player’s splits. I decided to take a peak at Jason Giambi today.

Overall, Giambi’s 2005 BA/OBP/SLG line is .237/.375/.351 – to date. More recent, from 5/3 through 6/5, it’s: .250/.351/.328. Neither of those groupings is pretty.

Now, on the other hand, from 5/15 through 6/5, the numbers are: .304/.360/.413. Is that worth what Giambi is being paid? No, but, an OPS of .773 is a lot better than one of .726. An increase of almost 50 points is a good sign.

However……and, you knew it was coming, right?……there’s something else out there that I think we should keep an eye on, and that’s Giambi’s walk rate.

From 4/3 through 5/2, Giambi walked in 16% of his PA. And, from 5/3 through 5/14, this rate rose to 21%. But, from 5/15 through 6/5, Giambi’s walk rate has dropped to 6%. This tells me that pitchers are now willing to challenge Giambi.

And, this is fine, if Jason continues to hit .300, as he has done since 5/15. But, if he hits in the .240 range, and does not walk often, and continues to have little power, then it’s even worse than before.

It’s worth watching over the next couple of weeks.

At this rate, by 7/15, it won’t matter who bats 3rd.
