    From Sierra:

“We’re going to be in first place at the end,” Ruben Sierra said after yesterday’s 9-4 defeat of the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium.

For the first time since 1997, the Yankees are not leading their division at the break. But, as Sierra said, their position is “way much better than where we started.”

    Is Rube becoming our Damon?

Well he’s been called a village idiot; I guess he has that going for him… (:

Oh come on…I like the comment, heck I LOVE the comment….I would like 24 more players to say it.

Its the intimidation factor….its still the Yankees, I don’t care what anyone says- we are still the team to beat…and we are nipping at your heels Boston….you better watch out because were coming, we’re confident and we have a score to settle.

      I like it.

      Funny Raf!

Phil, I dunno, two weeks ago, if you read this:

      http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2005/06/26/easy_call_race_is_a_runaway/?page=full

      you would have seen this:

///”We’re going to the Series, boys!” shouted Kevin Millar in the locker room after yesterday’s 7-1 thrashing of the Phillies (the National League really stinks this year, no?). ”We’re back! The [expletive] Sox are on a roll!”

”This is the place we thought we’d get to,” added Johnny Damon. ”It was just a matter of time. This team is playing great and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished.”///

I like just winning, and leaving the talk to the idiots.

I have no problem with players feeling over-confident about where they expect to be.

So far the idiots who can’t keep their mouth shut have won a WS and are still in first place this year.

And Where is the problem with Damon’s quote?
“It was just a matter of time. This team is playing great and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished”

This is Red Sock nit-picking- if Scott Brocious said the same exact thing in July 1998- would you accuse him of being cocky and tell him to shut up?

Did you miss the Millar quote?

Re: Millar – doesn’t really bother me one way or the other. IMO, in this line of work, if you need “bulletin board” fodder to bring your a-game, you’re in the wrong line of work. In general, I have no problems with shows of enthusiasm. I enjoy it, come to think of it

Re: Reuben – I liked Mariano Duncan’s “We play today, we win today – Dassit!” much better (:

no- I saw the Millar quote…but I don’t equate his quote with Rubens…unless Ruben was screaming and yelling it out loud.

Like I said- none of the quotes bother me, and I doubt the players are ruffled by them either.

I admit massive bias, but Sierra’s story has been great:

Imagine going from as toxic as Raul Mondesi in 1996 to guest managing for Joe last year: El Caballo to El Caballero in 15 years. I predict he tears it up at DH for the rest of the season.

      I like the quote.

Go Ruben! And by the way, his single against Jake Westbrook yesterday to knock in two runs was one of the best Yankee at bats this year.

Whenever there was a break in the action Saturday, Ruben and Matsui were talking to Melky. People will argue to the end of time that chemistry doesn’t help a team, but it sure can’t hurt to have guys willing to take a rookie under their wing.

Esp. when he’s 20 and from a different country.

      Naw, he’s alright. I like Ruben. :)
