    From the Seattle Times:

With the Yankees desperately seeking help for faded Bernie Williams in center field, New York officials are believed to have renewed their interest in Randy Winn.

Thus, it seemed fitting that Seattle officials reversed course on Sunday’s decision to activate veteran Dave Hansen from the disabled list and send down outfielder Chris Snelling, who rejoined the team here yesterday.

Yet the Mariners are saying there is no connection between Snelling’s return and speculation about Winn, and that they simply changed their minds.

Winn will hit .290, steal some bags, walk some, whiff once every six times up…….if he can man CF, I’d be happy with him on this team, batting 9th.

CF is supposed to be a power position. And yet, we have no power hitters out there…or even good players…

Winn would be fine for the yankees, they don’t need another Power Hitter in CF. And secondly, CF really isn’t a power position, not to the extent of 1B, LF or RF.

Agreed, since the Yankees get above average production from 3B, SS, 2B and, to an extent, C, they could carry a glove in CF, with an around-average bat, with no problem, IMHO.

makes more sense than Byrnes for Yanks’ needs: better CFer and a speedy #9 hitter. while Byrnes is -.55 against the league average in Range Factor, Winn is +.26 (not spectacular but above-average). what you’d miss of Byrnes’ occasional power, you’d make up in Winn’s speed and small ball skills. Is there any way we can get Felix Hernandez as a throw in?

IIRC, I believe the theory is that you have power at the corners (7, 5, 2, 3, 9) , and speed up the middle (6, 4, 8)

      Numbers relate to positions.

yep, that’s why the Marlins and Red Sox haven’t won any World Series lately. no power in CF. Shame, isn’t it?

My two cents on Byrnes: Avoid him. He only has value vs. LHP.

The first, second and third consideration is can the guy play a real good CF. Worrying about power from that position, especially with this lineup, is beyond silly.

I’ve been secretly hoping for Winn to come to NY to solve the CF problem. He’s not a difference maker, but he’s a great glove with speed and high average that always seems to have his head in the game. He also bares a slight facial resemblence to Bernie (the nose is wrong, but . . .). He’s also a free agent at the end of the year, so if he came cheap in a trade (and his impending free agency might help with that), the Yanks could test drive him before making a decision on whom to offer a deal to play CF in ’06 and beyond.

Didn’t the M’s already try Winn in CF? I don’t think that worked out very well.

Yeah, you’d think they’d do it every year…

IIRC, they said that Winn was a serviceable CF’er.

In Seattle, he had three things going against him

      1. Ken Griffey Jr.
      2. Mike Cameron
      3. Growing pains learning the CF position. After he got it down, he wasn’t that bad out there. A lot of people got hung up on what he did when he was acquainting himself with the position.

Cliff, Winn always reminded me more of B Real from Cypress Hill.
