11:16 am EST: Freddy Garcia has been a much better pitcher on the road this year (2.81 ERA on the road vs. 5.01 at home) to date.

But, he’s been rocked since July 1st – with an ERA over 5 since that date. Also, lefties seem to do OK against him – much better than RH batters.

I’m calling for another gift from Young Kitty and a Yankees win today, say, by the score of 6-4.

It’s the kind of wacky match-up the Yankees have excelled in winning this season. Hope you’re right, Steve. Still can’t get over the cover Torre has in the media. I don’t really get it.

  2. Steve Lombardi Says:

I think it’s the cloak of the 4 rings.

  3. Steve Lombardi Says:

OK, 1-0 Yanks after one. Just 24 outs to go…….

  4. Steve Lombardi Says:

    That didn’t take long. 1-1.
    It’s now a 6 inning game.

  5. Steve Lombardi Says:

2nd and 3rd, with one out, in the 4th – and Bernie whiffs and Flash pops out.

Some bottom 3rd today – Williams, Flash, and Womack. That’s a free 8 outs, thereabouts, for the Sox.

  6. Steve Lombardi Says:

What more can you ask from Small?

6 innings, 4 hits, just 1 run, and 6 Ks – including 2 clutch ones in the 4th.

Yankee bats better wake up in the bottom of the 6th!

  7. Steve Lombardi Says:

Some heart of the order in the bottom of the 6th: Whiff, Whiff, and a can of corn. Still 1-1.

It’s now a three inning game.

  8. Steve Lombardi Says:

Another solid frame from Small. This is storybook stuff.

  9. Steve Lombardi Says:

Gordon walks the leadoff batter in the 8th…..great……..

  10. Steve Lombardi Says:

    DP – whew!

  11. Steve Lombardi Says:

OK, 1-1, bottom of the 8th, top of the order due up. Let’s get a run, and turn it over to Mo for the 9th.

  12. Steve Lombardi Says:

That bottom of the 4th is looking bigger and bigger. Guy comes into this game, pitching to an ERA of 5+ for over a month, and they Yankees get 7 BR in 8 IP off him – and no earned runs. Ugh.

  13. Steve Lombardi Says:

    9-pitch 9th for Mo – 7 strikes. Beauty.

A-Rod, Godzilla, Giambi. Please, win this in the 9th, huh?

  14. DFLNJ Says:

Come on man this is the 2005 Yankees. Nothing is ever that easy

  15. Steve Lombardi Says:

    Bottom 9, Godzilla on 2nd, 2 outs, Bernie up……..

  16. Steve Lombardi Says:

    Great. Extra innings.

  17. Raf Says:

    Sox with the lead

  18. Steve Lombardi Says:

    According to MLB.com Gamecast:

Juan Uribe triples (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Bernie Williams. Scott Podsednik reaches on a fielder’s choice, fielded by second baseman Robinson Cano. Juan Uribe scores.

Why do I think those were not pretty plays?

  19. Steve Lombardi Says:

Posada, Womack, and Jeter, down by a run, due up in the 10th.

Looks like they’re gonna need a 2-out rally to tie.

  20. Steve Lombardi Says:

    Com’on Tino……..

  21. Steve Lombardi Says:

    ……attaboy.

Jeter gonna bunt again for Cano?

  22. Steve Lombardi Says:

One out left. Man, this hurts.

  23. hopbitters Says:

Not that I’m sitting here with the gameday window open at work, but I couldn’t help noticing (by ESP, of course) “Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Bubba Crosby replaces Tino Martinez.” Does it seem like every time they pinch run Bubba he gets picked off or gets real close to getting picked off? Oops – there goes Jeter. Down to Cano.

  24. hopbitters Says:

    Say goodnight, Gracie.

  25. Steve Lombardi Says:

Cano to center. Game over. Series over. Thuuuuuuu-uh Yankees lose.

  26. Scott Says:

I feel like Charlie Brown lately.

    I. Can’t. Stand. It.

  27. hah Says:

great to see bernie williams turn a routine fly out into a triple, its a travesty to see rivera take a loss after that garbage defense displayed.

  28. Josh Says:

I don’t want to start sounding like Steve but we can start kissing this season goodbye.

  29. Steve Lombardi Says:

    Did Bernie butcher it?

    I didn’t see – that’s why I’m asking.

  30. hah Says:

this was the best pitching i have seen from the yankees in 2 years and we lost the series because our zillion dollar offense and our 10 cent defense (say good bye bernie and jorge) are gutless, posada is useless behind the plate now because he cant hit and hes afraid to block the plate like a real catcher, which is why we lost!

heartbreaking to see mo take the loss with the way he pitched today, kudos to boston for officially ending the yankees dominance in the american league

  31. JohnnyC Says:

No, Steve, he never came close to catching it. He’s got the range of a postage stamp now, coupled with the arm of a gnat. Give Kaat his props, he said weeks back that pitching was not the biggest concern for the team, it was CF defense. The man knows his stuff. Now, if he’d get rid of those suspenders…

  32. hah Says:

steve: lets put it this way a good center fielder would have caught it, a mediocre center fielder would have made a good relay throw and held uribe to a double and bernie williams could not only not get to the ball but throw the WORST most non chalant throw to the cutoff man i have ever seen, its very very very sad and even jim kaat asked why bernie was in the outfield and not crosby at that point in the game.

  33. Steve Lombardi Says:

Wow. Factor in the whiff in the 4th and it was some day for Bernie. Day game. Maybe he’s not a morning person?

  34. Don Says:

Chris Russo said Bernie turned a single or double into a triple.

Anyone want to watch the Yankees replay tonight? Not me………

BTW…… John Sterling is unlistenable to. We must write WCBS and the Yankees to can this disaster of a radio crew after this season. Russo on WFAN has been replaying stupid Sterling mistakes that now up numerous daily faux pas.

  35. Jen Says:

I think now is the time to switch Cano and Giambi in the batting order. There ain’t nothing but a black hole behind Jason right now. I would’ve rather taken my chances with Flaherty hitting in the 7th than Posada. Jorge used to be able to take a walk here and there. Now he’s hacking away at the first pitch.

  36. Raf Says:

BTW…… John Sterling is unlistenable to.
    ======

    You *just* realizing that? :D
