    From The Chicago Tribune:

Joe Girardi may not have long to wait before succeeding his mentor, Joe Torre, as the Yankees’ manager.

Is it a done-deal that Girardi is next? I think we can never assume……

Why? What bona fides does Girardi have? He seems out of it as bench coach.

yeah agreed. People can call Joe Torre a push button manager, and a product of Mariano Rivera all they want, but he has won a few games as manager for the Yankees. Replacing him with a mediocre bench coach (and catcher for that matter) would be a huge mistake for Steinbrenner. However, I don’t think it would be as hard for Steinbrenner to fire him as it is Torre. I would give him he first 1-14 slide, and he’s gone like the wind.

Maybe. I think the issues are bigger than The Boss’s ease of firing. Between Joe & Cash, there’s been an absolutely miserable job of managing the farm system & the bullpen this year. Torre, in particular, has shown NO ability to effective use his younger players, instead choosing to use “proven veterans.” Could Andy Phillips possibly bat as badly as Tino Martinez? Could the two outfielders at AAA – the names escape me at the moment – possibly bat as badly as Womack? Could Colter Bean possibly be as bad in the bullpen as Wayne Franklin?

Not to mention the overuse of Gordon & Sturze, combined with the crushing misuse of Proctor, Franklin, Rodriguez, et al – a guy doesn’t pitch for a week, then gets pulled after he walks the first batter?

I’m very thankful of Torre for his great work earlier in the current run – from 96-01, he pushed ALL of the correct buttons and effectively used all of his assets. He hasn’t since then.

I understand that the Yankees are never going to be a minor league-using team like the Braves are, at least while Steinbrenner is running the show; but Joe just has not done a good job this year or last.
