The Yankees have signed Vince Faison from the Jackson Senators of the Central Baseball League. It’s an Independent League.

He’s an OF, now 24-years-old. Bats and throws left. And, he was a former 1st round selection (by San Diego) in the 1999 draft (20th overall).

From 1999 through 2003, he didn’t hit much at all in the minors – stalling out at Double-A. In January 2004, he was traded to Seattle in the Jeff Cirillo deal. Last year, he was in the Mariners chain and didn’t play much. He had a great year this season with the Jackson Senators. It’s anyone’s guess if he could ever help the Yankees.

another high school football player(DB)out of Georgia, toolsy guy who the Padres gave up on, runs well, power potential, but sub-par arm limits him to left-field…just another longshot…costs Yankees pretty much nothing for a look-see. but I wouldn’t exactly hold my breath for him to make the bigs.

but the Yankees assigned him to Tampa, their high-A team. he’s 23. what will this prove? did some quick reading on his exploits for Jackson this season (their season ended on Sunday)and they’ve been playing him mostly in CF but also in RF and 1B. Odd.

Maybe they want to make him a serviceable utility player. But still, a guy who’s stalled out at AA and is coming from an independent league is not a promising prospect. What’s annoying is that they Yankees feel the need to sign this guy because there isn’t anyone in the system already.

the prospects the Yankees have in the OF and the left side of the infield are all 19 to 21 and are considered 2+ years away from Major League consideration. and Melky’s melk-down earlier this season doesn’t speak well for the idea of rushing them up here. with Torre in the dugout, you’re not going to see a situation like the Braves anytime soon. Joe’s not a fan of precocious youngsters. one and out is his mantra.

It couldn’t hurt to take a flyer on him…
