I’m telling you, they better get this done. I’ve been stressed about it since last week.

I’m sure Cashman will bust this one up and then compound the mistake somehow. He always finds a way to blow it.

According to today’s ATM reports

1) The Yankees are reportedly close to re-signing LF Hideki Matsui to a 4 year contract, worth about $50 million.

Matsui’s contract expired and he doesn’t have enough service time to be a free agent, since time in Japan doesn’t count. He has a clause in his contract that says if he’s not re-signed by end of today, the Yankees must release him. Then, MLB rules state that a player placed on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release can’t be resigned by his old team before May 15. (But, players in this situation have been signed to minor league contracts and just weren’t allowed in the majors until then.)

If the above is true (and I have no reason to believe it isn’t), I won’t be worried until tomorrow.
