    From SI:

{Jeter} On the World Baseball Classic: “If I get selected it would be a huge honor. We’ll see what happens.”

Is Derek kidding? Does he really think they would leave him off the team?

it’s called false modesty, and it’s one of the things that many a sports writer eats up.

Nick, you make it seem like false modesty is a bad thing. I’d rather that than some arrogant blowhard like Barry Bonds who so graciously volunteered his services. Jeet’s a gentleman and he’s got some manners. I respet that.

personally, I like Jeter entirely for what he does on the field. In addition to his performance, I like the whole top-step thing, etc. But, he’s obviously very guarded with reporters and prefers his distance, while maintaining his popularity. It’s a good strategy, and kudos to him. But he’s quite boring as a result. He says nothing interesting ever. Again, it’s a smart approach to controlling one’s image, but it doesn’t, in my view, make him more likeable.

But you have to understand where I’m coming from. My favorite Yank right now is Sheff cause when he talks he just doesn’t seem to give a sh*t.

Sheff isn’t captain of the team. Having that position has a bit of responsibility to it. And I suspect he doesn’t has as lucrative an endorsement deal as Jeter. Not that I don’t enjoy Sheff’s mouth.
