    From Yankees.com

The New York Yankees announced today that they have signed free agent right-handed pitcher Scott Erickson to a one-year Minor-League contract with an invitation to spring training.

Erickson, 38, went 1-4 with a 6.02 ERA in 19 games (eight starts) with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005 after earning a spot in the rotation during spring training.

I’m guessing that Wade Taylor, Chuck Cary and Jeff Johnson were not available.

This is a joke – and a very bad one at that.

The last time that Erickson had any value as a pitcher was 1999.

For those needing an assist, that was seven years ago. This is embarrassing.

Apparently he got an invite to camp as a “favor” to Giambi (wow, talk about a year making a difference; last year they wanted him gone at all costs and now they’re doing him favors). He threw well enough that they inked him to a minor league deal. My guess is that this is basically to help him get a look from other teams’ scouts. Because I don’t really know where they could put him in AAA — that rotation is crowded, too.

In this case, why didn’t the Yanks sign Jeff Weaver again?

I don’t see a problem with signing Erickson – it’s not like he’s going to be counted on to pitch crucial October innings. He’s probably the 3rd or 4th in line of a call-up if need be.

baileywalk’s got it right…this was a favor to Giambi so that his good friend Erickson could get some exposure in Spring Training. He’ll try to get signed by KC or some such dump. You guys are over-reacting. It’s not like the team that plays in Che Stadium signing Jose Lima, fer crissake.
