Jeter: 2006 AL Batting Champ?

Tom Verducci of SI thinks so:

AL Batting Champion
………
2006: Derek Jeter, Yankees. Can it really be that he turns 32 in June? The career .314 hitter could get a boost with Johnny Damon in front of him.

It’s not a huge reach. Jeter was 2nd in 1999 and 3rd in 2003. So, he’s been close before.

It will probably come down to Derek, Manny, Ichiro, Vlad and Michael Young. Maybe A-Rod too.

Jeter has just as good of a shot at it as anyone in the A.L.

Well if Damon does his job and gets on base, Jeter will see a ton of fastballs with that 3-4-5-6 behind him.

I like thinking about which player has the potential, in having a great year, to really spark the team. Last year I felt it was Giambi, that if he could overcome all the craziness and have a good year, the Yanks would make the playoffs. I think it happened that way, he made a huge difference in the lineup. This year I think it’s Jeter. With Damon hitting ahead of him and the rough bunch behind him, all the ducks are in line for him. If he has a great year, his performance will create a ton of chemistry for the team. He’s had some great seasons in the 2-slot.
