The frustrating thing about last night is that Wright actually pitched well. He had a shaky first inning, but then settled down and matched Halladay (who was a bit wild, but got out of every jam he put himself in).

The funny thing about last night is that the three pitchers used were the three pitchers that shouldn’t be on this team. I personally think that Wright, Proctor and Sturtze should be replaced with Small, Dotel and Cox (or T.J. Beam, who is tearing up AA; his ERA is under 1). I can tolerate Proctor (that curveball was a mistake pitch — a terrible and stupid one — but he can get outs and he’s somewhat valuable). But I don’t think Wright is going to work out here and I never want to see Sturtze in another game unless the Yankees are up by six (at least). This guy is DONE. I’m sick of seeing this guy come in and serve up the long ball. What purpose does he have any more other than to pad other hitters’ stats? It’s a routine: he comes in, gives up a homer, shakes his head in disbelief, Torre pats him on the butt and then makes excuses for him. Listen, we all know Tanyon is a good guy, but he’s DONE as a pitcher. It’s time for Torre to figure this out and stop putting him in any important situation. Even last night was too important for him. Before he blew up the game, the Yankees were only down by three (at least that gave them the possibility).

I really just don’t understand what Torre is doing with Sturtze. It’s clear his arm is not one hundred percent and it’s clear he’s working through things — so why does he have to work through things in these types of situations? Let him work through his problems with some wiggle room.

If the Yankees are lucky, Sturtze will have a run-in with a can opener and be out about a month. Then they can forget about him and move on. Small needs to be the fifth starter. Then Dotel will come back and they can promote Cox or Beam.

If you’re gonna lose, might as well lose to their best pitcher.
