"If Cashman needs to start doing Torre's job, he needs to ask himself why he's still paying him."

Great point -- and another example of Cashman simply content to play the victim's role instead of being an effective baseball executive.

If Cashman doesn't "take away Torre's toys" then Cashman's not doing his job. It's a GM's job to clearly communicate to his manager that if players are on a roster, they are to be played. A manager is to infer that by having players on the roster at his disposal, the GM is implicitly (or explicitly) authorizing those players to play. If Cashman won't take Sturtze off the roster, it's Cashman's fault that Torre continues to rely on him. If Cashman made the bonehead decision to bring back Bernie Williams as a part-time DH/corner outfielder, despite a slugging percentage lower than his batting average, that's on Cashman. Cashman needs to step up and accept responsibility and start making better choices. After all, if Joe is as feeble-minded as we say he is, then it's Cashman's job to act like the brains of the operation and make Joe's decisions easier.

Who ever said Torre rewards performance? Obviously, Joe believes that an aging right-hander with no sustained period of success in his career resume deserves a zillion chances to hurt his team while a young left-hander with great stuff, excellent peripherals, and, so far, an ERA of 0.00, deserves to pitch for some other organization. 'Cause, given the backed-up nature of the Yankees' depth chart, it would take several injuries for Smith to see the light of day this season. Who was it that said Cashman ought to systematically take away Torre's toys?

And, was there no way to do something with Sturtze (to get Small on the roster) instead of sending down Smith?
===========

I was looking for a "designated for assignment," but I guess I shouldn't be suprised.

At least Smith'll get more work down on the farm.
