Melky Cabrera’s Patience

I have to say, even though it’s just two games, I’m impressed at the way Melky Cabrera makes a pitcher work. In fact, he’s been Giambi-like with his patience so far – note the AL leaders in pitches per PA (as of this morning):

This is a very good sign that Cabrera could be a useful player.

(And, check out Kelly Stinnett in the Top Ten as well!)

Very good point Steve. So far, I’ve enjoyed seeing Melky’s approach…except for his bunt attempts – jeez, were those bad.

About Giambi, the Times had a good article about his plate discipline the other day – worth a read in case you missed it.

Gee Steve can we get a slightly larger sample?

Don – I used the sortable stats from ESPN.com

I used “non-qualified” – if you run a sort with “qualified” it would give those hitters with more PA (than this cut).

I know this post is about Cabrera, but let me just add that I like Stinnett about a 1000 times more than Flaherty. Even if he doesn’t get a hit, he tends to make the pitcher throw a little bit, which these numbers back up. He’s a good backup compared to some of the crap that’s been around since Girardi left.
