Riding The Melky-Go-Round

Memo to the YES Network: When work begins on the Melky Cabrera Yankeeography, which I imagine will happen around the year 2020, please be sure include the footage from that mad dash around the bases during last night’s game.
That play set the tone for the game last night, to me. I think it really got the Yankees rolling. It certainly broke any tension that might have been in the Yankees dugout. And, the fact that it came via some embarrassing moments for Jason Varitek, well, so much the better.

While I don’t know about setting the tone, but it didn’t hurt.
Beckett was dealing, had a good fastball, but seemed that the Yanks were on everything. Just one of those nights. You could tell he was in for it, when he was hit while changing speeds; he wasn’t fooling anyone last night
Beckett was “dealing”?
He faced 13 batters and 8 of them scored.
The only thing he was dealing was crack – as in the crack of the bat.
Goddamn traffic yesterday. I got to my seat just after the Melky play.
I’d say that makes up for the inside-the-park home run from last year.
Beckett was “dealing”?
============
Beckett was clocked in the high 90′s. Saw him hit 97 a few times. He also gave up a hit on a changeup that was mid-high 80′s.
Beckett definitely had velocity last night. He lacked location, however. He could only get his fastball over, and it was not placed very well. You know you’re in trouble when GoB is ripping your heat back at you.
Bowa deserves a lot of credit for that play. For him to be watching the ball, notice Youkilis still at 1st, Beckett wherever he was, and Varitek in his peripheral vision, put it all together and wave Melky in time was brilliant. It looked like he was stopping him with one hand and waving him with the other hand at one point. Fortunately Melky kept going.
Jen – what time did you leave?
We left Metuchen at about 4:45. Ended up taking the Lincoln tunnel and heading up the FDR. Don’t know if we saved any time avoiding the bridge, but we like to think that we did.
There was an accident on or around the bridge that was backing things up, that’s why it was such a mess. Barring anymore accidents, it shouldn’t be as bad today.
Thanks – I’m leaving at 4:30 today and need to make a stop in Fort Lee first – - I was wondering if that was now too late.
In the third game in Detroit the Yankees were getting good hits (albeit singles) off of Zumaya. He had better heat than Beckett did yesterday, but if all you’ve got is a fastball it isn’t going to cut it for long in the majors.
You should be fine at that time Steve. Drive safe.
I will wave in your general direction tonight.
