I was just reading, over at Baseball Musings, how the Red Sox are starting to fold up like a cheap suit.

And, this made me wonder – if the Red Sox finish 3rd in the A.L. East this season, does that take David Ortiz out of the MVP race picture?

The Blue Jays are only 2 games behind Boston now.

    It’s possible.

I think the fact that he’s half a player is enough to take him out of the MVP running.

But if they do finish in third, I don’t think you can call him the “most valuable player to his team.” Without him what would happen, the Sox would miss the playoffs by an even bigger margin?

A-Rod shouldn’t have gotten the MVP for last place Texas a few years back, and Big Fati shouldn’t get it if Boston finishes in third.

I think the Sox will finish in second place, anyway. I would be stunned if the Jays pulled that off.

They need to establish exactly what an “MVP” is. The definition is not clear. Instead of putting the amorphous word “valuable” in there, they should just call it the “Best Player Award.” I don’t think you should be penalized for being on a bad team or rewarded for being on a good team.

Hafner is having a monster year on an awful team and most people don’t know it. I’d take him over Papi in a second.

If a DH wins, he should have a record-breaking year. Because think of how the DH role is thought of. When a regular player DHs, we say he has “half a day off.” How can you give the MVP award to someone who takes half of every game off?

I actually picked the Red Sox to finish behind the Jays at the start of the year….this collapse was a long time coming….It was just hiding behind their beating of the International League….sorry the National League and the Orioles

Me too. I have a hard time voting for Ortiz when he isn’t even the best hitter on his team (that would be Manny)
