Godzilla Heads South Before Coming North
From the Staten Island Advance -
Hideki Matsui created quite a stir during a batting practice appearance. Rookie shortstop Chris Kunda stole the show once the game began.
Matsui, the New York Yankees outfielder battling back from a broken left wrist, joined the Staten Island Yankees for a pre-game workout prior to their 3-2 victory over the Oneonta Tigers.
Matsui is scheduled to do the same today at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, then join the Double-A Trenton Thunder for an Eastern League playoff game tomorrow night.
Eventually, he hopes to arrive in the Bronx in time to help the Yankees during their American League playoff push.
I’m thinking that Matsui will be the Yankees D.H. on September 12th. That will give him around 19 games to show if he should be on the post-season roster. That’s enough time.
The problem here is now Giambi’s injury. If Jason cannot play 1B, then what does Torre do? Does he sit Cabrera to play Matsui? Or, does he shut Giambi down until the post-season? Would that be a bad thing to do?
Stay tuned, I suppose.

Sit Jason for a week. Let him recover for the post season. I guess that means Matsui DHs, but he should get some fielding games in, too. (Melky at DH?)
I would agree with sitting Giambi for a week and putting Matsui in Left, Melky in Center, and Damon @ DH (giving his body some healing time) and either Andy Phillips or Craig Wilson at 1st base.
