  • Giambi’s Wrist Requires 2nd Shot

According to the Hartford Courant -

Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, a hand specialist, examined Giambi and administered the shot during the game. Giambi, who thinks he strained the wrist on a check swing in Seattle Aug. 24, got his first shot between games of a doubleheader against the Tigers on Aug. 30 and played the next day. Typically a player will rest two or three days to let the pain from the shot subside.

    Hmmm….

Yankees record since 8/25, the day after Giambi got hurt: 8-6
Yankees record between 8/25 and 8/30, before his shot: 2-3
Yankees record after 8/30, when he got his shot: 6-3

Giambi may be in a 1-for-25 slump, but, it doesn’t seem like this is killing the Yankees now – probably because of their recent schedule.

I would sit him for four days in a row now – without question – and let him heal properly.

Just a theory on my part, but because of the whole steroids thing, I don’t think Torre gives a damn about Giambi. I think they encourage him to play hurt — and he does. People behind the scenes say Giambi is a physical mess. It’s amazing that he’s even on the field. He is the anti-Pavano as far as pain thresholds go.

How else to explain Torre constantly playing Giambi, even when it was obvious he was badly hurt?

I think the only reason they’ll rest him now is because Matsui is coming back (the Trenton Thunder’s season is over) and they’ll DH him.

Remember how much stuff Giambi caught after sitting out game 5 of the 2003 World Series? Supposedly his teammates were pretty upset with him, especially after he was able to pinch-hit and hit a homer. How things change…. Anyway, it’s always a good sign to have someone gritting their way through the playoffs, I think Paul O’Neill was hurt during every championship run, from his hamstrings to his ribs:)

Today the Yanks face a guy who went .2 innings in his only ML start this year, giving up 8 hits to the tune of a 108.00 ERA. Which means, of course, he’ll throw a three-hit shutout today!

To be fair to Giambi, he couldn’t play because they were in the NL and he couldn’t play first — his knee was shredded. He could hit (and DH), but his knee was too banged-up to be in the field. He did have to have surgery on that knee, so it wasn’t a Manny-esque “knee pain.”

I thought the Yankees were pissed because Giambi was out partying with Ricky Williams the night before the game in FLA.

It shouldn’t have mattered, as the game was played @ night

Let Giambi rest until he’s ready, Phillips/Guiel /Wilson should do just fine and Matsui is comming back now.
