New York Yankees, Etc. Bruney’s Ink

Maybe Mad Dog Russo was right?

Cory Lidle has now made 8 starts for the Yankees:

3 very good, 4 not good at all, and one that was OK.

I thought that Lidle would have performed better than this – and, now, the Yankees 4th starter in the post-season is not a sure thing. It could be Wright or Lidle.

The next three starts, in terms of performance, for both Wright and Lidle will probably be the deal breaker.

On a positive note, the magic number is now seven – with 18 games to go. This date, last year, the Yankees were two back in the loss column with 19 to play. What a difference a year makes, huh?

Lastly, a riddle (of sorts) for you – What does David Ortiz have to do these days to watch the Yankees? The answer: Look up!

It’s a bird!
It’s a plane!
It’s a frog!

A frog?

No Papi.

Not bird, not plane, not even frog, it’s just the Yankees, a.k.a. the top dog.

Jeez, I hate to agree with Chris Russo about anything, but Lidle does stink. I thought he stunk before he ever got here, though. I was shocked that he put together some good (even outstanding) games. At this point, we should just view this as him coming back to Earth. Also, I would say that Wright has an almost lock to be the fourth starter in the playoffs. Lidle had the job to lose — and he lost it. Torre doesn’t seem to be a big Lidle fan at this point, and you know how he loves Wright.

It was nice to see A-Rod handle a fastball for a change and send it into the black. Giambi is also hitting the ball much better now.

Plus, even with Mo out, the bullpen looks pretty good with Bruney, Proctor and Farnsworth.

I think it would be quite appropriate if the Yankees clinch against the Red Sox, which looks like it might just happen.

The 4th starter job is Wright’s at this point. And deservedly so. Lidle has to be fighting for a spot on a very crowded playoff roster right now. If he can barely handle the Devil Dogs, I don;t want to see what he does in the playoffs. It would be very sweet to clinch at home against the lowly Sux, an appropriate commeuppance.
