Pettitte Done?
I’ve heard rumors that ESPN News and ESPN Radio in NYC are now reporting that the Yankees have signed Pettitte to a one-year deal. I have no confirm myself yet. I will have more on this possible story later today.
Update, 4:21 PM ET: ESPN.com now has a BREAKING NEWS Alert up that reads:
Source: Pettitte headed back to the Bronx
After three years in Houston, Andy Pettitte is returning to the New York Yankees with a one-year deal, ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney reported Friday. Terms were not yet known.
Update, 4:25 pm ET: ESPN.com now has a story up on the report:
Many thought Andy Pettitte should have never left New York. It looks like that issue has been rectified.
The left-hander and the Yankees have reached an agreement on a one-year deal that will pay him $16 million in 2007 with a player option for 2008, sources close to the negotiations told ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney on Friday.

ESPN is now reporting that it’s a 1 year deal for $16M, with a player option for 2008.
Same salary as Randy Johnson, wow.
I wonder if the Yankees low-ball Igawa now?
Got to grab the told you so’s…..
From my Dec. 5th reminder of my Nov. 7th reminder…
####This was such an omnipotent posting (on Nov. 7th) that I thought I’d remind everyone….
/////Little bird told me that Andy will go through the motions, conclude that he’s got another two years in him, and sign up for same. He’s leaning toward NY if they’ll have him. He’s enjoyed being home and will play in Houston if the Yankees don’t offer, but he also sees that life after baseball as a retired member of YankeeLand (maybe with a plaque in CF) is a pretty nice place to be for the rest of his life.
I’m a bit worried how much he has left. But if he signs, he’ll give it his all; that much we can all be sure about.////
If he signs, we’ll be flush with 3′s, 4′s, 5′s and 6′s. Do everything we can to structure a trade with Pavano, et al, to seek a good, young, potential 2 or 3. Left field in NY vs. left field in Houston will work to Andy’s advantage. He has good and bad days, but did string together a pretty nice sequence late in the year. He does know how to pitch, and knows how to pitch in Yankee Stadium. Guts aren’t the issue…. ligaments and cartilage are.

Probably do lowball him but they still sign him IMHO given that Pavano and RJ are such question marks heading into spring training.
I’d still sign Iggy. But I’m be real interested in moving Nancy Pavano, plus one of the new arms we just got and some cash for a young guy with 2 or 3 ability. Unless Andy and RJ and Moose all go down hard, and at the same time, with Iggy on the roster and the young arms we have in waiting, there is enough pitching to get the job done. Brian, repeat after me…”The Carl deal just didn’t work out, and we found a way to help the ballclub.” See, that wasn’t so hard.
I’m thrilled. One year at $16M gives the team flexibility for 2008 if it doesn’t work out. They can now let some of the younger arms stay in AAA for more seasoning and Rasner, Karstens, and Igawa can be brought along as needed since RJ won’t be ready for spring training and Pavano will undoubtedly slip in the shower or have his leg fall asleep while sitting on the sofa.
I wonder if the Yankees low-ball Igawa now?

I think the intention was to always give him a contract worth between 4 and 5 million per year for 3 years.
I think they will still do that and trade pavano getting 50 cents on the dollar for him.
Igawa is good to have around for 2007. He can go back and forth between the rotation and teh pen before finding his true spot in 2008.
Very nice Ca$h. The player option is interesting. Why would Andy NOT pick it up?
They still need to sign Igawa, because he’ll be the only starter who doesn’t have any kind of injury concerns. We now have 6 starters. (Maybe we could go to one of those NPB rotations.) But if we can learn anything from Boston, it’s that you can’t have too much pitching.
Now, if we make the playoffs next year, the media can ask who are you going to start in Game x, and Joe can say that the pitcher’s name ends in *andy*. Maybe we can lull a guy named Koufax out of retirement or trade for Wandy Rodriguez and have an *all-lefty-andy* rotation. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
Sorry guys, it’s hard for me to control my excitement at the mere prospect of getting Clemens back too.
I don’t want Clemens. I lost all respect for him when he went to Houston. We gave that asshole a freakin’ HUMMER.
Indeed you can never have too much pitching.
Going into last season the Yanks had 7 starters projecting as
Mussina
Johnson
Pavano
and the other 2 spots taken by 2 of Chacon, Small, Wang, Wright.
Small and Pavano were immediately injured and Chacon was injured in season.
not to mention the infeffectiveness of RJ, and the 5-and-out-itis of Wright.
Actually, Pettitte paid for that Hummer, IIRC.
