• Yanks Paid Embargo Settlement In 2003

I just found this information inside a news report that had nothing to do with the Yankees:

In 2003, the New York Yankees paid the government $75,000 to settle a dispute that it conducted business in Cuba in violation of the embargo. No specifics were released about that case.

My first thought was “Jose Contreras defected from Cuba in October 2002. Could that have been the ‘business.’?” But, that makes no sense – since the Yankees signed Jose in Nicaragua (if I recall correctly).

Anyone have an idea on what this could be all about? Could it be a retro-fine on something to do with El Duque, Andy Morales or Adrian Hernandez?

That story has some more insight into the Yankees/Cuba thing.

      Thanks Ben.

“The Yankees had no comment on the report, but a source said the team’s infraction involved negotiations with Cuban baseball players.”

Boy, that was money well spent.
