Two Clueless Moments For Joe Today

From Dom Amore -

Two years ago, Torre felt the Yankee veterans were copping the attitude that, ‘oh, everything will be all right” and just waiting for things to happen. He raised the roof several times, especially one Friday night in St. Louis. …and make no mistake, he can raise the roof with anybody. You can’t tell what he’s like or what goes on by watching TV.

But anyway, he says he doesn’t feel it’s like that now, he’s okay with the effort and the sense of urgency he sees from the players.

Torre is not a big detail guy, so he didn’t know Scranton had a day game today. When we asked him about Clippard coming out after one inning, he was surprised we knew about it. Thought it was a night game for the Triple A squad. Anyway, it’s not official but pretty obvious Tyler Clippard is pitching Sunday.

Mmmm…that’s gooooood green tea!

Are you giving Torre grief because he didn’t know the farm team had a day game rather than they played at night? I hope that’s not the case because then I’d expect you to be mad at Torre for knowing the farm team’s starting time rather than concentrating on the current team’s situation. That’s your usual m.o. for criticizing a ballplayer, manager, coach, or exec.

If you’re giving him grief for a different reason I’m not following you.

How could Torre not know it was a day game?

He knows the kid is pitching Sunday – at least I hope he knows. And, he probably knew he was lifted after one inning so that he could pitch on Sunday. Knowing that the kid was lifted tells Torre it’s a day game – because if the game is later tonight, there’s no way he pitches that inning. You just don’t pitch him today at all, if the game is to be played later at night and you want him for Sunday.

Unless, again, Torre has no clue as to who’s pitching for his team 3 days from now and it’s Cashman who makes the decision on who’s pitching when. And, if that’s the case, then Torre is clueless there too.

    Either way, he’s clueless.

Steve, you’ve got it in bad for Torre. Why? Did he ‘dis’ you somewhere along the line?

The manager for you then is Showalter, Mr. Detail himself. Probably the only guy who would know what you think Joe Torre should’ve known.

    This is all so silly.

I see a certain group of people each morning. If I run into one of them in the afternoon around town I instinctively say “good morning” from habit. I guess that makes me clueless.

I’m curious if you think you can do a better job managing (all phases) the Yankees than Torre or handling the baseball operations than Cashman. You don’t have to be better than them to criticize them but the tiniest little things you seem to jump on makes Torre more sympathetic to me.

Who do you want to manage the Yankees? Pick anyone still living and not currently managing a team.

Heck, at this point, let Roger Clemens manage the team. It will give him something to do on his off days.

Seriously, I don’t know who I would pick. I’d want to really study who’s out there and then interview them and check references.

    But, I can’t do that, can I?

    //But, I can’t do that, can I?//

No sense worrying about it then, is there ;-)

Seriously though, I have this weird feeling that Joe isn’t well health-wise. Either that or his brother’s health is weighing on him too much.

This is already being followed up by newer threads so our great pearls of wisdom might fall by the wayside but I’m still interested in who you would want to manage. You don’t need to take references into account since you can’t but I’m surprised you haven’t been pining away for someone for years.

I would of thought you’d be a Buck guy but since that tune’s been played before maybe not.

    Tom Kelley? Earl?

I think Torre has other things to worry about then the Triple A team.

Also, Steve leave the old Italian man alone, someday that will be me and you and then we’ll both understand what it’s like to be Joe. HAHA.

Tom Kelly would be on my list – along with Ron Hassey and Wally Backman and Girardi…perhaps Larry Bowa too.

Kelly is 10 years younger than Torre – and he’s been through the grind. But, I’m not sure he wants to leave the gig that he has now.

Hey, I’m already an OIM! [wink]

My guess is that Torree knew there was a game and knew that the plan was to take Clippard out after an inning. He just didn’t pay too much attention to when the game was.

Who do they remove from the 40-man to add him?

Steve, I’m not an OIM yet but my dad is getting there. haha.
