Despite constant speculation about manager Joe Torre’s job, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner says someone else also needs to deliver as the team looks to reverse its floundering start: general manager Brian Cashman.

“He’s on a big hook,” a spirited Steinbrenner told The Associated Press in a rare interview from this Tampa office. “He wanted sole authority. He got it. Now he’s got to deliver.”

Giambi reportedly admitted to a 2003 grand jury that he used steroids.

“He should have kept his mouth shut,” Steinbrenner opined. “The matter is in the hands of the baseball commissioner.”

You don’t get to see Big Stein wield his hook and offer a zip’it that often these days. It’s about as rare as a Wil Nieves basehit. So, soak this one in as much as you can…if that’s your thing.

Gotta be honest, it’s not my thing at all. I prefer Steinbrenner when he’s hundreds of miles away in Florida with his big yap shut.

I’m not saying what Steinbrenner expressed isn’t a fair sentiment but I’ve always felt better when he was as far away as possible.

Cashman’s plan may still work. The problem for George, is that his plan wasn’t focused on this year. It was focused on rebuilding the pitching staff, and making the team younger. Building for a champion two or three years down the road, while keeping enough pieces here to challenge now.

I don’t think he’s going to be around long enough to see it happen though, and I’m afraid that whoever comes in to replace him is going to mortgage the future for a ring either this year or next year, and it’s not going to work.
