The widows and Billy Martin's son were there to celebrate the 1977 team.

Next year's Old Timer's Day has the potential to be very emotional with the Stadium closing down.

Anyone wonder where Mrs. Mantle was to represent the Mick given the appearance of the Mrs.' Howard, Hunter and Munson? I am reading "7 The
Mickey Mantle novel" by Peter Golenbock and that may explain it. The book borders on soft porn
with Mick and Billy as costars. Merlyn took some serious abuse.

One last thing, I want to congratulate Anaheim on winning the World Series---oh, you mean "K-Rod" celebrates like that after every game?!? My mistake. God, I hate that guy and his antics.
============
Only after every Angels win he's involved in.

I thought the Yanks needed players with "fire" and "intensity" and "heart" and "emotion?"

//Jen - how about a deal? Do away with Fan Appreciation Day and have OTD on the last home game of the season?//

Nope. There's nothing wrong with the way it is now. You're only saying this because of the current state of the Yankees. Sometimes they win on OTD, sometimes they lose.

Big ditto. Remember that when he's a FA this winter and some Yankees fans start to holler that they want him.
------

He may be a dumbass, but I wouldn't mind him being OUR dumbass. If the Yankees don't pursue A-Rod, they're insane. He's one of the best closers in the game and he's young. When they invented the term "filthy stuff," they had someone like K-Rod in mind. He throws mid-90s and has a slider that can be simply unhittable. No one makes hitters look sillier.

That roar-up-to-God yesterday was absurd, but I'd still take him any day. Mo can't pitch forever, and there's no replacement for him just yet from within (plenty of good young guys, but nothing definitive).

By the way... bottom of the ninth -- Cairo gets to third with one out -- Melky up at the dish... would anyone have minded another shot at a squeeze? K-Rod is probably one of the hardest guys to make contact with, and Melky was having an awful day. Just a thought.

As I was walking out of the Stadium I was thinking to myself "Steve is probably writing his annual 'Yankees lose focus on OTD' post":-)

I think the distraction danger is more for the starting pitcher than the rest of the team. And obviously Clemens didn't get distracted today (it's the high socks I tell ya. The entire team needs to go with the high socks.) I think I even spotted him on the bench during introductions at one point.

I agree with rbj. They failed to capitalize on their few opportunities. But I also give credit to the Angels pitching staff. They're not exactly slouches.

Now, as for doing away with the current Old Timer's Day format, sorry Steve, no way. It's an institution. Teams all over baseball have days honoring special years and whatnot. But no one does OTD anymore. Call me weird, but I like seeing guys like Homer Bush next to Reggie and Yogi and everyone else. Besides, you need some of the youngers guys there to play during the game. And that's another thing. If you split up the ceremonies, I guess you're have to do away with the game, right? You can't take my OTD game away, Steve.

Ok, I looked it up. In the Torre era, the Yanks are 5-6 with 1 rain out on Old Timers Day. I haven't looked beyond '96 because I'm tired.
