John Mayberry –
Sideshow Bob shudder.
Isn’t that the year the Yankees were going to be a running team and not the Bronx Bombers?
Ugh.
1982 – yes, that was the Collins, Griffey, Mumphrey “track” team.
Yep, the Bronx Burners… Terrible idea. Went through 3 managers that year, IIRC (Lem-Michael-King). Collins was eventually dumped on the Jays, along with Fred McGriff. The WS (Suds Series?) was won by the Cards, who at the time were known for their speed and defense. The AL Pennant was won by the Brewers, who IIRC won the division the last day of the season. They slugged their way to a division title (Harvey’s Wallbangers), and beat the Angels in the playoffs (whose lineup featured 4 MVP’s in Baylor, Carew, Jackson & Lynn). Of note, the Angels blew a 2-0 series lead (ALCS was best of 5 then).
Seems the game has changed a bit since then. Baseball has 3 divisions per league, with an extra round of playoffs, the Brewers are a NL team now, KC was a pesky powerhouse, 17(!) of those 26 teams have moved into new stadiums, the Expos are gone, the league expanded twice, adding 4 teams (FLA, COL, TB, AZ)…
