Steve, rev up your “Giambi’s return will hurt this team” stats. AP says Giambi will be making rehab starts with High-A Tampa and may be back with the team as early as next week.
It’ll be interesting to see Torre pull out his hair plugs trying to get everyone playing time. The most important thing he must do (if Giambi actually comes back healthy) is to NOT sit Melky and put Damon in centerfield. Anything else he does — as far as playing time for Phillips and Duncan — is unimportant. As long as Melky stays in center, everything should work itself out.
My guess would be that Shelley “Sloth” Duncan goes down, Phillips remains at first, Melky remains in center, and Damon and Giambi split DH time (with Damon moving to the outfield on days when Torre wants to give Abreu and Matsui a day off).
Bailey, from your lips to Torre’s ears.
I’m calling it: Giambi rear-ends a garbage truck during his rehab and goes back on the DL.
Wait a minute, didn’t that happen to someone already?
