If you are going to “reserve judgement” about a guy that physically appears almost with question to be benefiting from steroid use, that is surrounded by people that stink from the Balco scandal, and who all but admitted using steroids “unknowingly” how the hell do you say one word about anyone else ????

The difference between Bonds and A-Rod is that A-Rod will get to (and have to) put up large numbers of homers while under the scrutiny of a PED testing program. Bonds racked his numbers from great to off the charts while Selig and MLB were asleep at the switch. It appears that the Ranger’s clubhouse was among the hotbeds of steroid use. A-Rod might, or might not, have tried ‘em for a while, but if he pounds out 40-50 a year for the next 4 or 5 years, if and when he breaks the record it will be considered clean by the fans. I hope it happens, and I hope it happens in a Yankee uniform.

I’d really like to see some stats comparison between pre-testing and post-testing seasons. For example…. A guy like Varitek has OPS’s of .863, .872, and .855, in 03, 04, and 05, then drops to .725 and .759 in ’06 and 07. Reasonable presumption…dirty. I know he’s a catcher and he hit “that” age, but it does make one wonder. Jorge on the other hand…OPS’s of .923, .881, .782 in 03, 04, and 05, compares nicely to .866 and .965 in 06 and 07. Reasonable presumption…clean. Using similar concepts, A-Rod looks clean, Jeter looks clean (no greenies there either – way to go Cap), Matsui looks clean. Manny looks clean. Ortiz looks clean, although he’s hitting a lot more doubles and a lot less homers now. Maybe that’s another gauge, how does the ratio of doubles vs. homers change before and after PED testing. Sheff looks like he might have used between 2000 and 2003. Bonds looks dirty between 2000 and 2004. He probably hit something like 60-65 more dingers in those years than might have been expected. Look for spikes in the years leading up to PED testing, and a drop off right after. Sammy looks dirty from 98-02. Note the huge shift in the doubles to homers ratio. I’m sure Sammy wanted the money, but he also came back so he could prove that he could hit 30-40 dingers while testing was going on. He picked Texas, in part, because the ball flies out of there and so he could DH. Not quite working out for you big fella. Looks like more doubles than dingers. Check out the spike in Gab Kapler’s numbers.

I didn’t think Chipper accused ARod of anything, he was just breaking it down and I think he’s right – as ARod gets closer to the record I’m sure there will be all types of investigative reporting going on to try and find dirt on him.

If Canseco had the goods on A-Rod, why didn’t we see it in his first book? A-Rod was a superstar and already the game’s highest-paid player at that point.

I’ve never really cared for Chipper much but I think all he is saying is that anyone who approaches any record is going to have to answer questions about steroids, whether they are fair questions or not they will still be asked.

Plus, the reporter probably specifically asked him about ARod…I don’t think Chipper just brought ARod’s name up out of nowhere.

I don’t find anything wrong with what Jones said. In fact I agreed with pretty much everything. Steve why don’t you stop searching for drama.
