A-Rod Has A Long Way To Go To Catch These Guys

Did you know that Hall-of-Famer Eddie Murray went hitless during Games 3 through 7 of the 1979 World Series and then he went hitless through Games 1 and 2 of the 1983 ALCS? That gave Murray a streak of 29 straight post-season At Bats without a hit.

Did you know that David Justice went hitless during Games 3 through 6 of the 1998 ALCS, Games 1 through 3 of the 1999 ALDS, and Games 1 and 2 of the 2000 ALDS? That gave Justice a streak of 26 straight post-season At Bats without a hit.

No one ever really talks about these two streaks.

Shoot, Gil Hodges played all seven games of the 1952 World Series and took the collar – fashioning a streak there of 21 straight post-season At Bats without a hit.

Knowing this, it doesn’t seem fair to make a big deal about A-Rod being Oh-for-his-last-whatever in the post-season…until that At Bat number reaches the mid-to-high 20’s. As it is now, Alex is not the only big name in baseball history to string together a small amount of post-season AB’s without a hit.

It seems fair to me if ARod and Boras expect the Yanks to extend his current contract 10 yr’s at $30 mill+ a yr.

No way I want to hear about and watch his 0 for whatever performance in the PS again, much less 10 yr’s.

Exactly, which is why I’ve never understood why people obsess about the dollar value after the contract is signed. If we’re talking about someone like Kei Igawa or Carl Pavano – CLEAR WASTES OF MONEY – then, sure, talk all you want about how overpaid they are relative to their worthless contributions. But a week ago, on September 30th, A-Rod was finishing up one of the best 162-game stretches in Yankee history. A-Rod’s the friggin’ MVP and two crappy games later we’re trashing him again.

I am a Yankee fan…but fuck us…we deserve the hatred if we can’t keep things in perspective. By the way, it’s not like any other Yankee has been hitting very much since Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS. Matsui should thank A-Rod every day that no one talks about how lousy he’s looked in the 2005 and 2007 ALDS….

ARod hasn’t hit the last two games, but nobody has and we faced two of the best pitchers in the AL, so you can’t really trash ARod too much.

However, he’s the “best player in the game”, he needs to step up and get something done at some point, and lately in the playoffs he’s been a complete no show. If he goes hitless the next game, and any games we are lucky enough to play after that, then I think it’s pretty clear that he’s got a mental issue when it comes to the playoffs.

Now if he’s going to be great in the regular season and suck in the playoffs then I’m willing to deal with that because there are 8 other guys in the lineup who need to produce as well. It would just be nice to see the guy be able to carry a team on his back in the playoffs, like alot of other great players have done before.

We can only hope that he snaps out of it, I honestly thought he would do it this year, he still has time to prove it but I’m not sure it will matter.

A-Rod is totally and completely unfairly criticized for his post-season performance, bu-ut… it’s hard not to at least MENTION it when you see something like last night: man in scoring position, Carmona on his last batter, up to 100 pitches; instead of pitching to the worthless-right-now Matsui, they let him go after the presumptive MVP and he strikes him out. A-Rod put together a good at-bat and would eventually strike out on a nasty pitch, but he still struck out and didn’t give his team the breathing room it desperately needed (a run that would have possibly won the game).

So, yeah, you can’t blame A-Rod for a bad stretch in September — and I don’t know if he’s pressing or what — but you just kind of wish he would come through in those situations. Last night the Angels walk Papi to get to Manny and Manny CRUSHES a home run off of K-Rod. A-Rod definitely needs one of those moments to get people off his back. He can’t claim they’re not throwing him anything. Carmona went right after him with basically the game on the line and he didn’t come through.

So while it’s not “just A-Rod” who’s struggling, he has to come through at some point or it will never end.

I’ve been a Yankee fan for almost 50 yr’s. I keep things in perspective as well as anyone, including you probably.

My point is that others may not be hitting either, but I’m not talking about others. I’m talking about ARod who’s done nothing in the PS since game 4 of ‘04. Nothing in ‘05. Nothing in ‘06. Nothing, so far, in ‘07. He wants to make more than anyone else in baseball. Fine. He needs to earn it in the PS.

I don’t want to see the Yanks pay him $30 mill+ for another 10 yr’s and see potentially nothing.
