George King thinks that it’s possible.
Here’s a means-nothing-in-the-big-picture reason to like Eiland, from an S.I. feature on him published last October:
During a career filled with lowlights, Eiland’s one bonafide highlight was the ‘99 game in which he outpitched Pedro Martinez, a unanimous Cy Young Award winner that season. At the time, Eiland had lost six straight major league decisions. His wife, Sandra, keeps a tape of the 3-2 victory in their home outside Tampa. “I’m saving it for our two daughters, Nicole and Natalie,” Eiland says. “It’s something I hope will mean a lot to them in five or 10 or 20 years. They can look at it and say, ‘You know, maybe Dad wasn’t that bad.’”
