I disagree. He used to be but his right knee’s problems have been with him for more than 1 1/2 years including surgery and I don’t think he’d return to his former numbers if he moved to Yankee Stadium.

He was never a good fielder and he’ll be as bad or worse than Matsui in LF. If you want to sit on him for a year to take over RF if Abreu leaves then maybe he’s usable but otherwise he’ll only be a LF sub and DH if Cabrera is sent away in the trade.

Pittsburgh is going to want much, much more if Snell is coming back. This sounds like a Yankee fan’s pipe dream of a balanced offer.

But if you are getting Snell or Bay along with Marte, I could part with Melky, Tabata, and a minor leaguer to do it. It’s been reported for a while now that Bay could be available; i think he’s a worthwhile option… he’s a much better player than his numbers last year would indicate.

I hadn’t heard about this. To be honest, I’m a bit scared of Bay. His bat looked really slow last year and his power was nonexistent. Also, he looked pretty lost out there in LF. Trading Melky means that Damon goes back to CF, Bay takes over LF and Matsui goes to DH. A Bay/Damon OF is only a slight step up from a Matsui/Damon OF but neither one is very palatable. And it’s not like the Yanks really need another bat anyway.

I believe they were discussing this trade before the Pirates traded Mike Gonzalez to the Atlanta Braves. After that, Pittsburgh needed someone at the back end of their bullpen.

You could certainly trade a guy like Karstens or Wright for Marte, couldn’t you?

I don’t think the Kevin Thompson trade was for real. Wasn’t that just an unsubstantiated and ultimately untrue rumor? If they wanted KT, why didn’t the trade happen?

Hughes + IPK for Marte. That seems to be the price of talent these days. Plus MiniStein seems to be just hysterical enough to do it.

Marte was a Yankee prospect, he was traded to the Pirates for Enrique Wilson back in 2001.

The player would almost have to be a guy on the 40 man roster, which is currently full and Rivera, Arod and Petitte still need to be added to it. Could Matt DeSalvo or Jeff Karstens be enough. The pirates are considering Shaun Chacon, so they must be desperate for starting pitching…
