Damaso Marte Hank: We Got Pitching Out The Yin-Yang
Dec 06

From the Daily News -

Hank Steinbrenner had told The News that the Yankees’ relief corps were the pressing issue for him, even though the Bombers were pursuing Santana at the time. “The bullpen was always my biggest concern,” Steinbrenner said. “I’m fine with the starting rotation.”

The only lefties currently in contention for a Yankee bullpen spot are Kei Igawa, Sean Henn and Chase Wright. They could also consider using some of their minor-league starters – Alan Horne, Jeff Marquez or Steven White, for example – in relief roles during the spring.

Kei Igawa, Sean Henn and Chase Wright…

Well, to borrow from Cliff….Name three people who I don’t want to see in Papi Ortiz’ kitchen, Alex.

The real problem is what are their options. Is Mahay worth 3/12? Or is he asking for more? What would Marte cost?

I would rather have quality right handed arms rather than a mediocre lefty. Henn will definitely be given a chance if he is not traded, as he is out of options. Maybe (fingers crossed) he can surprise us.

It’ll be interesting to see if Eiland can do what he’s been hired to do: get the young pitchers on the roster to consistently throw strikes, stay ahead in the count, and, most importantly, trust their stuff. We haven’t had a pitching coach since I don’t know when who advocated going after hitters rather than trying to just hit spots.

This is the soft white undebelly of the Yankees(in addition to the Young Three). In the AL East,The Bosox AND the Blue Jays have a much better bridge to their closers. The Yankees have some interesting propositions beside “Farny”,but nothing is assured.Look it would be great to have all effective righty pitchers but a quality lefty is necessary in a playoff situation where that option can be utilized effectively. Can Veras and Co become a reliable bridge to Mariano, hopefully Eiland and Girardi can make a difference.

there was also the Wayne Franklin, Jesse Orosco and Chris Hammond eras…

we really need Melancon, Sanchez, Whelan and/or Cox to have a Jobe-like rise.
