What do you think, will Mo, someday, stand alone on this list?

Well, it would be a remarkable accomplishment, but perhaps not something he’d retain sole possession of for very long.

Papelbon will be approaching 1000 strikeouts in about 8 more seasons (assuming he maintains his pace of 80 per year). A quick and dirty calculation suggests that he would reach that plateau with fewer than 200 walks, a rather impressive achievement when you consider the other players on the list.

Certainly it may be said that Papelbon has far to go to establish his longevity and health, but at the same time it can also be said that his best years are still in front of him.

But the reality is that they are two different types of dominant closers. Mariano is not the flamethrower that Paps is, and he doesn’t have the dominant K to BB rate (his is 3.6, Papelbon is at 5.7). What he does have is the playoff resume and it remains to be seen if Papelbon can equal it.
