    14 Tigers	-27	5.69	14.69	1.18	166.0

Pretty much as one would expect – the Yankees pitching is 12th out of fourteen so far this season – in terms of overall effectiveness. But, in terms of BR/9 IP they’re middle of the pack. And, their SO/BB ratio is not bad at all. So, what’s the problem?

Basically, it’s four pitchers who have ruined the stats, to date, for the Yankees. See:

RSAA	ERA	BR/9 IP	SO/BB IP
    Andy Pettitte	5	2.45	12.27	2.00	25.2
    Brian Bruney	3	1.64	9.82	2.20	11.0
    CM Wang 2	3.81	9.69	1.86	26.0
    J. Chamberlain	2	1.42	9.95	4.00 6.1
    Edwar Ramirez	1	0.00	7.71	3.00 2.1
    Jon. Albaladejo	1	3.18	9.53	7.00 5.2
    Billy Traber	1	2.57	14.14	2.50 7.0
    Ross Ohlendorf	1	3.77	11.93	2.17	14.1
    Kyle Farnsworth	0	4.32	14.04	4.00 8.1
    Mike Mussina	-3	5.75	13.72	2.33	20.1
    LaTroy Hawkins	-6	9.64	16.39	1.67 9.1
    Ian Kennedy	-8	9.64	20.57	1.00	14.0
    Phil Hughes	-8	8.82	19.84	1.00	16.1

The numbers for Mussina, Hawkins, Kennedy and Hughes are terrible. Lousy command and too many baserunners, especially, for Hughes and Kennedy. If they looked shell-shocked now, they should.

Hank is absolutely right about Hughes and Kennedy – these are guys who have to learn how to deal with failure – having these abysmal numbers says they need to improve on their ability to locate pitches and do more than rely on natural talent. There is a reason why there are guys still in the minor leagues with decent stuff- they can’t pitch at a big league level. Hughes and Kennedy are young and they can take these starts to learn how to pitch.

I said pre-new blog that Mussina needs to become Jamie Moyer and Hank agrees.
