Yanks Pitching – By The Numbers
Yankees up-to-date pitching stats, via the Complete Baseball Encyclopedia:
Pitcher RSAA IP ERA BR/9 IP SO/BB HR Chien-Ming Wang 8 59.0 2.90 10.68 2.00 1 Mariano Rivera 7 17.0 0.53 4.76 inf 0 Edwar Ramirez 4 8.2 0.00 9.35 2.50 0 Brian Bruney 3 11.1 1.59 11.12 2.00 2 Darrell Rasner 2 12.0 3.00 7.50 5.00 2 Joba Chamberlain 2 18.1 2.95 9.82 3.14 1 Chris Britton 1 4.2 1.93 9.64 0.00 0 Jose Veras 1 4.2 1.93 7.71 inf 0 Mike Mussina 1 49.2 3.99 11.23 4.00 7 Kyle Farnsworth 0 20.0 4.05 13.05 2.71 6 Jon Albaladejo 0 13.2 3.95 13.83 2.17 1 Billy Traber 0 8.0 4.50 18.00 1.20 1 Ross Ohlendorf -1 23.2 4.56 13.31 2.44 1 Andy Pettitte -1 53.0 4.42 13.58 2.38 6 LaTroy Hawkins -4 19.1 6.05 12.10 1.57 2 Kei Igawa -5 3.0 18.00 33.00 inf 0 Phil Hughes -12 22.0 9.00 19.64 1.00 2 Ian Kennedy -14 28.2 8.48 17.27 0.90 3
Thoughts on these:
- Edwar Ramirez has done well in the limited time that he’s been out there.
- If LaTroy Hawkins doesn’t start doing better, I would consider releasing him.
- Mo Rivera and Mike Mussina’s command has been off-the-charts good.
- As much as people want to praise Mussina and rip on Andy Pettitte, their stats are not that much different:
Pitcher RSAA IP ERA BR/9 IP SO/BB HR Mike Mussina 1 49.2 3.99 11.23 4.00 7 Andy Pettitte -1 53.0 4.42 13.58 2.38 6
- With 6 homers allowed in 20 IP, it’s time to start calling Kyle Farnsworth “Boom-Boom.”
- Ross Ohlendorf’s numbers are not that much different than Farnsworth – except that he doesn’t allow as many homers.
- If you removed Chien-Ming Wang and Mo Rivera’s stats from the Yankees team totals, and replaced their total with league average pitchers, the Yankees would have the next to last worst team pitching in the league.
Here’s how the A.L. teams stack up, in terms of RSAA, when you include Rivera and Wang for the Yankees:
Team RSAA IP ERA Indians 44 383.0 3.31 W-Sox 33 377.1 3.55 Jays 22 408.1 3.68 A's 16 391.0 3.34 Orioles 15 381.0 4.06 R-Sox 3 395.1 4.14 Rays 2 386.1 3.68 Yankees -8 376.2 4.32 Angels -9 396.1 4.38 Royals -13 370.0 4.31 Mariners -16 389.2 4.37 Twins -16 371.2 4.17 Rangers -21 395.0 4.65 Tigers -37 375.0 4.99
Take out Wang and Rivera and the Yankees would be between the Rangers and the Tigers.
Basically, it terms of “star” power, the Yankees pitching staff is a two-man team: Rivera & Wang – at least so far this season. (Even the mighty Joba has been close to human with just 2 RSAA and an ERA near three.) Outside of Mo and Worm-Killer, the Yankees staff has been average at best and terrible at the worst.
Something to think about when some folks suggest that the Yankees problem this season has just been their bats dealing with injuries and not producing as expected.

I would avoid lumping Ross Ohlendorf and Kyle Farnsworth into the same mold until you break it down a little further.
How many of the runs Ross gave up were in his second or third inning of work? They worked him out in the spring as a 1 inning pitcher, and then used him as a long man.
I wonder if that makes a difference.
The last 6 games Latroy Hawkins has pitched in, he hasn’t give up a run. That covers 7.2 innings. Not sure how he can start to pitch better than that.
His numbers look alot worse because of that one game early in the season where he gave up 6 runs. He’s probably been league average without that.
I don’t think you can really judge someone after only 15.2 innings pitched either. Since he’s pitched good in his last 6 outings, I’m encouraged by that and don’t see why you would call for his release.
