Jack Curry reports that the Yankees are upset over the fact that David Ortiz has been selected to be the main man in the “Call Your Shot promotion” at this year’s All-Star Game (to be held at Yankee Stadium).

The New York brass would be smart to drop this one. There’s no way they’re going to look good having a hissy fit over this promotion. It’s just chum for the Yankees-bashers, if you ask me.

Or, as Michael Silverman of the Herald put it:

“Touchy, touchy, touchy. Like a colicky baby who’s also battling diaper rash, the 2008 Yankees can’t seem to stop bawling. Besides a good burp, they also need to grow up. As if sitting in last place in the AL East were not bad enough, the Bronx Bombers discovered on Thursday that after years of planning for this summer’s All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, they were the last to discover that a new “Call Your Shot” insurance-company promotion would feature the Red Sox’ David Ortiz mimicking Babe Ruth’s famous called-shot home run from the 1932 World Series.”

Simple fact is that if A-Rod didn’t eschew home run hitting contests, they would have at least invited both of them, if not A-Rod alone. Fact is though that Ortiz is perfect for the role – larger than life slugger with a big, fun-loving personality. Biggest difference between him and Ruth is that he prefers white rice and beans and the Babe preferred beer and hot dogs.

What’s really unfortunate though is that because he’s broken so many Yankee hearts, Yankee fans can’t recognize and enjoy him for what he is: one of the biggest stars in the game, and one of the most exciting “clutch” hitters in history.
