Big Papi Down
Via the Boston Herald:
After injuring his left wrist during the Red Sox’ victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night, [David] Ortiz learned yesterday he has tendon sheath damage that will keep him sidelined indefinitely. According to a source, Ortiz’ wrist will be immobilized for roughly the next month to determine whether the injury can heal on its own.
If it cannot, the Red Sox and Ortiz very well may face a harsh reality:
Season-ending surgery.
I could see the Sox now using Manny at D.H., Sean Casey at first, and playing Jacoby Ellsbury, Coco Crisp, and J.D. Drew in the outfield.
Picking up Casey is really paying off for Boston now. It must be nice to have a bench that you can call upon when an injury strikes. You know, like, having Morgan Ensberg to replace Alex Rodriguez when he was out with his quad…
Update: As you can see from the comments section below, I pulled a rock on this one. (Note to self: Don’t blog before your morning serving of oatmeal and tea.) Yeah, I totally blanked on Kevin Youkilis. Probably because I like to forget that he even exists…

Why would they bench Kevin Youkilis when David Ortiz is hurt?
You’re right. I was blogging too earlier this AM, I guess.
OK, make that: When Kevin Youkilis doesn’t play, I could see the Sox using…
Its going to be extremely difficult to score runs at the pace they had been scoring with their top run producer on the shelf. The pitching has to get better, fast. Crisp can stop wondering where he might be traded, as he will play quite regularly if Manny is DH-ing most of the time. But he has to start hitting again, or the offense will wither on the vine with Crisp and Lugo being near automatic outs.
The logical approach is to give Casey at-bats when Manny plays left. Youk has to be in the DH mix because of his tendency to decline in the second half. That’s the sole silver lining, that maybe Youkilis can keep his BA closer to .300 with a little less wear and tear. Then again, that’s presuming Ortiz does require surgery because otherwise, from July on, he’d be DH-ing again.
I’d like to see Moss come up to be in the outfield mix; if nothing else he’d be showcased for a trade to replace Ortiz, if that becomes necessary. And Moss is their best position prospect at the moment.
Picking up Casey is really paying off for Boston now.

It paid off earlier when Lowell went down with an injury too.
Anyway, I would’ve also passed on Casey last offseason.

I’m with you there Steve, great hitter that seems to hammer the Yankees.
[...] It’s possible. The early word is that Big Papi will be out for at least three weeks, but season ending surgery is still an option. This is bad news for the Red Sox. Sure, they’ll probably still make the playoffs. Their pitching staff is that good, but they don’t win another World Series without Ortiz in the middle of their order. Papi and Manny are the ultimate one-two punch, and when one of them is down the Sox can struggle offensively. Sean Casey will be an adequate replacement for now…..but will the Sox be forced to go out and get somebody if Ortiz does have to sit out the year? And what will they have to give up to get it? [...]
