[...] It’s possible. The early word is that Big Papi will be out for at least three weeks, but season ending surgery is still an option. This is bad news for the Red Sox. Sure, they’ll probably still make the playoffs. Their pitching staff is that good, but they don’t win another World Series without Ortiz in the middle of their order. Papi and Manny are the ultimate one-two punch, and when one of them is down the Sox can struggle offensively. Sean Casey will be an adequate replacement for now…..but will the Sox be forced to go out and get somebody if Ortiz does have to sit out the year? And what will they have to give up to get it? [...]

I'm with you there Steve, great hitter that seems to hammer the Yankees.

Picking up Casey is really paying off for Boston now.
-----------
It paid off earlier when Lowell went down with an injury too.

Anyway, I would've also passed on Casey last offseason.

Its going to be extremely difficult to score runs at the pace they had been scoring with their top run producer on the shelf. The pitching has to get better, fast. Crisp can stop wondering where he might be traded, as he will play quite regularly if Manny is DH-ing most of the time. But he has to start hitting again, or the offense will wither on the vine with Crisp and Lugo being near automatic outs.

The logical approach is to give Casey at-bats when Manny plays left. Youk has to be in the DH mix because of his tendency to decline in the second half. That's the sole silver lining, that maybe Youkilis can keep his BA closer to .300 with a little less wear and tear. Then again, that's presuming Ortiz does require surgery because otherwise, from July on, he'd be DH-ing again.

I'd like to see Moss come up to be in the outfield mix; if nothing else he'd be showcased for a trade to replace Ortiz, if that becomes necessary. And Moss is their best position prospect at the moment.
