Yankees Draft Forecasting ‘08
Thursday is draft day at MLBvel. Trying to figure out what the Yankees will do and/or who they will get is as predictable as trying to figure out how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. But, here goes…
We know that the Yankees have the 28th, 44th and 75th selections in the draft. And, I’m only going to talk about those…since once you get past selection #100 - and the Yankees 4th pick is #106 in the draft - it’s really needle in a haystack time.
With the 28th pick, I would be thrilled if the Yankees were able to get Conor Gillaspie - a left-handed hitting 3B out of Wichita State. But, there’s a good chance that he’ll be gone before the 28th pick. So, I’m guessing the Yankees will go with a High School pitcher here - like Brett Devall (a lefty out of Florida) or Ross Seaton (a righty out of Houston).
With the 44th pick, I would be thrilled if the Yankees were able to get Allan Dykstra - a left-handed hitting 1B/DH out of Wake Forrest. But, there’s a good chance that he’ll be gone before the 44th pick. So, I’m guessing the Yankees will go with a left-handed pitcher here - like Wade Miley from Southeastern Louisiana or Mike Montgomery (out of High School) from California or Kyle Lobstein (out of High School) from Arizona.
With the 75th pick, I would be thrilled if the Yankees were able to get Adrian Nieto - a Florida High school catching prospect (via Cuba). But, there’s a good chance that he’ll be gone before the 75th pick. So, I’m guessing the Yankees will go with some like Shane Paterson (an OF/1B out of Long Beach State) or Brett Mooneyham (a left-handed High School pitcher out of California).
So, there you have it: Ten names of potential Yankees selections this week. Don’t be shocked if I went “oh’fer ten” on these…as you can never predict the draft. And, anyone who says that they can predict it is really pulling your leg.

[...] I would have passed on this one. Instead, I would have gone for Conor Gillaspie (or, if it had to be a pitcher, Shooter Hunt). June 5, 2008 | Filed Under Off The Field [...]
[...] DeVall caught my eye here - because I thought, going into the 2008 draft, that if the Yankees went for a high school pitcher with their first pick, they would have grabbed [...]
