Please consider taking the following poll:

If the Yankees are still just a few games within .500 at the All-Star break, should they look to trade their "free agents to be" (Giambi, Farnsworth, Abreu and Mussina) for prospects?

i voted to trade them all for prospects, but in reality, i think they should field offers for anyone and everyone, and then make the trades that make sense for the club.

you cant just say trade someone or you cant trade someone else when you dont know what you would get back in return.

I didn’t vote. Won-Loss record is irrelevant unless you know where a team stands in relation to securing a playoff spot.

I’m surprised you didn’t have a choice to reacquire Tyler Clippard.

I wouldn’t be averse to trading them all (along with some other throw-ins) either way. I might keep Abreu depending on the stage of the current Yankee prospects and the ones being traded for.

I’d trade Melky too. I loved him but he’s playing out-of-his-mind poorly.

      I don’t get it.

You might want to pause and think of something that will make certain Yankee fans wet themselves in horror: three of those guys might be back next year. Abreu and Mussina could definitely be re-signed — Mussina especially, since it won’t cost much. And it’s even possible — if the Yanks don’t want to spend a gazillion dollars of Big Tex (which I hope they do) — that they bring back Giambi. Big G has been a headache, but when he’s healthy he hits. It’s not totally impossible that people will have ample opportunity to post “Mussina/Giambi/Abreu are old and totally suck” posts next year, too.

All three have no-trade clauses, do they not?

I didn’t answer because we also have to factor in what their compensatory draft pick status value would be.

      I.E. Type A, Type B, nada.

Remember Tom Gordon the free agent got us 2 draft picks that resulted in Joba and Ian Kennedy.

I don’t know the formula that is used (Elias does it, but its supposed to be known). I’d have to look at it that way.

If all 4 of those guys wind up bringing in 8 draft picks (we’re going best case) in the first 2 rounds, then keep them and let them go as free agents.

If you think you can get better, on each individual case, look at it that way.

Anyone know what the status right now for each of these guys is?

you know what i don’t get? Why don’t teams tell their players hey, let us trade you for a bunch of good prospects to a win winning team, you get a shot at a ring, and when the year is over come back to us cause we’ll have a few bags marked $ for ya

      Corey,

I think thats actually happened before, and I’m pretty sure the A’s did that with Ricky Henderson, and I recall it happening in a couple of other wink wink nod deals.

I also think some ball player in the 80′s or 90′s either got double crossed by his former team on it.

Might have been Eddie Murray, someone at the end of their career, agreed to a trade, and the team didn’t sign them back and signed a replacement instead.
