Then again, you can be prepared for potential injuries by having a 40-man roster populated with some players who are ready and able to make a contribution to the big league team.
------------------
Very few of those players exist. If they were able to produce to the level of the guys they're backing up, they'd be starting.

Steve, in philosophy what you say is true... but there are degrees. We are missing our #1, #4 and #5 SPs... with our #1 out for 2/3's of the season. That's not death, but pretty hard. 2 of 3 of our best OFers. Our MVP for 20 games. 2 decent BP guys (Bruney and Albie). Our all-star catcher is disabled from throwing most of the year, and therefore isn't catching much. And Jetes misses a bit of time.

It is hard for the bench/farm to make that up. And when you have hi-end guys, even a decent backup is poor by comparison.

Injuries are a fact of baseball life, but if you have 'more then average', it's going to hurt you. Imagine the Sox without Beckett, Lester and Buccholz. I will admit, Nancy and Youk have stepped up to fill in for Ortiz, but the year ain't over.

It could be a lot worse, as Giambi and Moose have been better then expected. Our BP has been good. Out bench at the beginning of the year looked decent... turned out to be crap. Having to carry 3 catchers is hurting us, but what can we do?

And we are still not out of it, but admittedly our chances for the PS are slim. We have to hope that Cano and Jeter start carrying us some, and maybe Cashman will pull something out of his sleeve.
