Scott Kazmir is pitching at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night. Can Victor Zambrano be far behind?
In their never-ending quest to find starting pitching, the Yankees plan to send a scout to watch the free-agent righty throw sometime this week, according to a source.
Zambrano is infamous for being the pitcher the Mets got when they shipped highly touted prospect Kazmir to Tampa at the trading deadline in 2004.
Zambrano, who went 10-14 over three seasons with the Mets, pitched for Toronto and Baltimore last season, but hasn’t pitched in the majors this year. After being designated for assignment by Colorado at the end of spring training, Zambrano went 0-6 with a 9.45 ERA for the Rockies’ Triple-A club.
I can’t wait to see the “Cashman Kool-Aid Drinkers ‘Low Risk, High Reward’ Rationalization Party”™ if the Yankees actually sign Zambrano.
Victor Zambrano? Really? I guess that Bobby Witt wasn’t interested in pursuing a comeback…or else the Yankees would be looking at him too.

If the Yanks scout Freddy Garcia does that get posted under the same category? Just wondering what your thoughts are on that. Obviously, Zambrano isn’t the answer here.

noone saying any of these guys are difference makers, but how does it hurt to take a flyer? it costs the yankees nothing but pennies.
id rather see the organization do this than ship out blue chippers for overhyped mediocre talent at the deadline.

Well, Garcia – IF HEALTHY – has proven that he can give you 200 IP and 15 wins in a season. Plus, he’s not a thousand years old. So, I would hope that the Yankees would be scouting him – along with all the other teams that are reportedly in the hunt for him.
The catch may be that he wants more than a one year deal. That’s a bit of a concern. I would be willing to give him a contract for this season and maybe the next. But, I would be careful about going beyond 2009. Maybe I would do an option for 2010 – - but nothing more than that…again, assuming he’s sound and looks good now.
If he is OK, and motivated, Garcia COULD be a huge pick-up for the Yankees this season…in terms of getting back into the chase.

Due diligence. Costs nothing. In other news;
“Jeff Weaver signs minor league contract with Cleveland Indians
1 day ago
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians signed free agent pitcher Jeff Weaver to a minor league contract on Saturday, giving the veteran a shot at making his sixth big-league team.
The right-handed Weaver will report to triple-A Buffalo of the International League.”
So they trade Sabathia to the Brewers, and come up with… Weaver. So sending a scout to check on Zambrano isn’t out of line with what teams in the majors are doing. Leave no stone unturned.

As bad as he is, Weaver still has a better resume than Zambrano.
Spending the gas money to have a scout go see Zambrano is an absolute waste of time.

I’d like to see the Yanks offer a Jon Leiber type deal to Freddy Garcia. Minor league contract for the rest of the year and a major league contract for next year.

That isn’t saying much. Given the state of pitching in the league, remember, Weaver was picked up by the Indians after not doing much worth mentioning in the Brewers organization (you can add the Angels, Cards & M’s, if so inclined), it is not surprising that someone sends a scout to check out Zambrano. Maybe he has something, maybe he doesn’t, it couldn’t hurt to check.
Due diligence.

~~Due diligence.~~
Yeah, but, you don’t need to send a scout to see Zambrano to perform due diligence on him. What we know, already, is enough. He never was any good and he’s past that “prime” already.

I can name a few pitchers that fit this criteria, and were able to get their act together for a brief run.
The Yanks aren’t looking for someone to save the franchise, they aren’t looking for an ace, but if they get some use of of Zambrano, then it’s a bonus. If not, it costs them little. Maybe he pitches in the bigs (Erickson, Small), maybe he doesn’t (”Running Elvis” Hernandez, Nomo).
Given the state of Yankee pitching, they are not in a position to turn down arms.

Raf, I have to disagree. But, it’s OK for us to agree to disagree.

Yeah. It’s cool
I guess we have different philosophies on this matter (player sourcing).
