Richard Sandomir has an excellent feature in the Times today on the Thurman Munson memorabilia auction to be held next week.

Click here to read Sandomir’s report. As per the report:

Money from the auction, [Diana] Munson said, will help finance the college educations of her seven grandchildren. “That’s not the main reason, but it’s one of them,” she said from Canton, Ohio. “I’m going to be 60. Time marches on, and you talk about downsizing.”

The Times feature also includes an awesome slideshow of some of the memorabilia that will be available.

August of 2009 will be the 30th anniversary of Munson’s death. It’s amazing to think that there’s a whole generation of adult Yankees fans who were not born yet at the time of Thurman’s passing. But, for those of us who are old enough to remember, it’s hard to read this feature in the Times and not get somewhat choked up about it.

    Steve,

I think you wrote earlier that it’s a shame that the Yanks couldn’t help w/ Thurman’s kids’ college tuition. I hate to see the Munson family sell some of this stuff – like his 1977 WS ring.

If I had the money to afford some of these items, I’d like to think I’d buy them and pass them right back to the Munson family.

Yes, my suggestion was that the Yankees “rent” the stuff from the Munson family, show it in the new Yankees museum, and then give it back to the Munson family…maybe when the grand-kids are grown…with the family collecting money for the rent until then…

seems like a win-win thing to me.
