July 2008 Survey Question #4

Please consider taking the following poll:

There are reports out now that suggest the Yankees will determine whether they should be sellers or buyers this season just before their next trip to Fenway Park on July 25th. New York plays six games before that time. How many of those six games, in YOUR OPINION, would the Yankees need to lose to become sellers before the trading deadline expires this season?

It depends on Boston and Tampa.

If we lose 4 and they both lose 5, then its all good.
If we win 4 and they both win 6…then life isnt so good.

If the Yankees lost all 6, they’d still have a chance at the wild card no? Can’t assume BOTH Boston and Tampa would win all 6…and it looks like Tampa is going to have road problems the rest of the reason. Boston is not the best road team right now either.

Red Sox play 6 on the road during that period..Angels and Mariners. I find it highly unlikely they win all 6 of those. Tampa plays Toronto and Oakland at home. I would be shocked if they won all 6 of those games. Yankees play Oakland and Minn at home. Two underrated teams but definitely beatable because both offenses are probably as bad as the Yankees.

So it wouldn’t be encouraging if the Yankees lost all 6 but I don’t think it would kill their chances at the playoffs…just make it a lot tougher.

Losing three to the Twins would be pretty bad for their wild card chances. Losing three more to the A’s would be worse. That puts both of those teams even further ahead in the WC race. And while the A’s offense is definitely worse than the Yanks, the Twins are comfortably ahead, and third in the league in runs scored. A’s run prevention is the best in the league, so if the Yankee bats are slumping, they could have problems with them, too.

But I don’t believe the Yankees will be sellers, because they won’t give that signal to the fans. They may not be as aggressive in adding someone, but they won’t go into sell mode.

The Yankees can never be ’sellers’ in the sense that they would trade top-shelf stars and give up on the playoffs for 08. The Yankees are a business, not a baseball team in the sense of the KC Royals, for eg.

Having said that, I could see more or less degree of trading. But we’ll never see what happened in Cleveland: trading CC and starting to plan for 09 and beyond.

Red Sox fan…we know the Yanks have issues but Boston will have their problems on their 6 game road trip and Tampa will have problems with Toronto and Oakland as well, so my point is that I don’t think it would kill the Yankees chances that early in the second half to where they should start selling off pieces.

Plus, my example was a worst case scenerio of losing all 6 games at home which would probably be unlikely. A more likely bad scenerio would be a 2-4 record…but the Yankees usually own the Twins and the Twins suck on the road.

The Twins offense(103 OPS+) is about equal to the Yankees offense(102 OPS+) but the Yankees offense is far better than Oakland’s(94 OPS+). Oakland offense is built off of guys walking a lot, so if you don’t walk them it really limits their scoring because they are the worst hitting team in the AL at .249.

Pitching wise the Yankees(99 ERA+) have far better pitching than the Twins(91 ERA+) and Oakland(113 ERA+) is much better than the Yankees but that would include Harden.

So I would say that if the Yankees hit the ball against both teams they should be alright…the question is will they hit? They should be alright against the Twins but against Oakland I think it depends on the match-ups.

Boston has +3 HOME games coming, TB has +6 ROAD games and the Yanks +3 ROAD games. Both Boston and TB have played outstanding at Home and well below .500 on the Road. So, for this and other reasons, I would project that TB (not Boston) is our AL East competition for the WC.

We have 6 more games against TB, which will be very important (duh).

We also have very little to ’sell’. We could ‘dump’, but why bother? JD is really our only sellable MLB asset but we are short of OFers, as AJax and Tabata are really not ready until 2010.

I think we will buy and stand with our existing guys. A big RH bat and an impact starter are our main needs. We will see if Cashman can pull a rabbit out of his hat.
