In Dreams 2
Well, it’s not up there with Thor and Meg Ryan; but, I had a dream last night where the Yankees traded Melky Cabrera to the San Francisco Giants for Aaron Rowand.
It was pretty detailed – right down to a T.V. station “exclusive” video clip of Rowand arriving in New York and getting out of an Escalade to enter the Stadium offices, an AP internet story from Rowand’s agent stating that (in retrospect) Aaron would have preferred to sign with the Yankees (over the Giants) last winter, and, an offer from Brian Bruney to give up uni-number #33 to Rowand.
Of course, in reality, Aaron Rowand has a full no-trade clause this year as part of his contract – and a limited no-trade clause for 2009 through 2012. Plus, I don’t think the Yankees would trade Melky for a guy who is seven years older, has a long-term deal, and who plays the same position – even if it would be an offensive and defensive upgrade at this point in time.
File this one under “Steve still thinks about the Yankees too much.” Why I don’t dream about Angelina Jolie and/or Jessica Biel, like most guys, I dunno…

FWIW, Rowand is having a pretty good year, and that contract of his isnt quite as bad as it may appear… and whats money to the yankees anyway?
he can hold down the fort in CF for the next year or two until AJackson is ready and slide to RF, or we can slide Jackson to RF or LF if Rowand is the better defensive option.
Rowand isnt a great player, but on a good team he’s a solid role player who can balance the lineup on the right side.
speaking of dreaming, why not include Matt Cain in there for tomorrow night, will ya?
Problem with getting Rowand is another 15 million on payroll each year. He is a gutty ,gritty impact/clubhouse type of guy but do the Yankees need to pay someone else $15 million a year? Turn Two, Hal and Cashman do care about the money so spending a gazillion dollars on a overglorified/ nice player is a thing of the past. Maybe until CC is signed ………..
Matt Cain? JP Ricciardi originally wanted Cain for Rios and now look at Cain. Cain is no great shakes,if he comes to the AL he might be Dontrelle Jr.
Rowand was actually given an $8 million bonus at the front end of his contract… so he’s owed $8 million for 2009, and then $12 million for the next 3 years.
Matt Cain is a horse. if he’s available, which SF vehemently denies, you get him.
Turn Two, bottom line Rowand is making 60 mill for 5 years. 12 mill is not that far off from 15 mill……Anyway 12 is still too much to pay for someone like that anyway. What is Coco Crisp and Ellsbury making? They won a championship with a traded guy(who is cheap) and a homegrown player at center. And Cash and Hal are trying to get away from that type of gluttonous contract.
The era of the 209 mill payroll is hopefully coming to an end. Cash and Co are spending 70 million more than the second highest payroll (The Tigers) and the Yanks need a bench, fleece Sabean for Cain and have holes all for the exorbitant price of 209 mill? This was 209 million very poorly spent if they have this many holes.
Matt Cain has been a dissapointment this year and remember that he pitches in the ultimate pitcher’s park, PAC BELL/ATT/SBC Park. His ERA has ballooned to 4.41 this year, what is that in the AL? 5.50? The Yankees right now need certain holes filled(despite spending 209 mill on payroll) and Cain is not needed to make it to the playoffs.
its 60 million over 5 years, but the Yankees would only be on the hook for about $44 million over 4 years, approximately. so it breaks down to $11 million a year. thats hardly a back breaking salary for a veteran OF who has a little pop in his bat and plays plus defense in CF.

actually Cain is exactly what id argue the Yankees need to make the playoffs. they can continue to lean on Ponson and Rasner to pitch 2 out of every 5 days and continue to expect results.
Cain slots back into the 4 spot into the rotation this season, and can eat innings. he’s got much more talent than he’s pitched this year. i think playing for a perennial losing team in SF is killing him, personally.
you arent adding offense to this team. if they cant make the playoffs with Damon, Jeter, Abreu, Arod, Giambi, Posada and Cano, they dont deserve it.
