Via Dan Graziano:
Teams that have spoken with the Yankees in recent weeks say Brian Cashman’s top priority is a left-handed reliever. With the whole world interested in the Rockies’ Brian Fuentes, the Yankees are looking at other options in case the price for him gets too high. They don’t think they can get Baltimore’s George Sherrill, whose price will be high and who pitches for a division rival. Other names that have come up include Pittsburgh’s Damaso Marte and John Grabow and Kansas City’s Ron Mahay, who has also drawn interest from the St. Louis Cardinals.
Has a lack of a lefty in the pen been the Yankees biggest issue this season? I don’t think so.
What the Yankees need is upgrade, over Rasner and/or Ponson, on the back-end of their starting rotation; and, a right-handed bat who can play the outfield (and spell Damon and Abreu, as needed).

I completely agree, Steve. This is puzzling if true.

I’m still trying to figure why Moeller & Hawkins are still on the team.
They have a RHB OF in Christian (yeah, yeah, I know he ain’t much, but…). I’d have to ask Sexson if he can play the OF in a pinch; it would help a bit.
I think when Ponson/Rasner are replaced, I think they will be replaced by someone in-house. Ponson has bought himself a little bit of time, having thrown 2 out of 3 quality starts. If there were anyone with a short leash, it would probably be Rasner.

Moeller is still on the team because Posada cant throw the ball. If Molina got hurt,…god help us.

If Molina gets hurt, call up another catcher, or make a trade. Moeller hasn’t started since the 12th. He made a guest appearance 10 days prior, on the 2nd. As it is, he’s taking up a roster spot.

How about Justin Duchscherer to fill a spot of either ponson or rasner? John Grabow would be a nice fit for a LH RP.
