Gil Patterson blew out his rotator cuff, that is what happened to him. Otherwise, greatness was his. So don't compare.

And yeah, IPK is a stupid nickname, regardless. Like big poppy. I don't mind Ortiz, just the stupid RSN/ESPN nickname. And hearing Waldman (begone!) using it, or any Yankees broadcaster or fan, drives me nuts.

99%+ of players should not have a nickname.

And I gave Alex the most deserved one of his era, aka A-Freud.

but, I’m going to wait before I start going too crazy…because I’ve seen so many fail in the past.
----------------
Joba blew through the minors... Just like Hughes & Kennedy did.

And the caliber of pitchers you saw in the past don't compare to Hughes Kennedy & Chamberlain.

Too many young pitchers around the league doing well to cloud optimism about young Yankee pitching

Well, if it ends up that Hughes and Kennedy don't amount to much, maybe, just maybe, it will stop the current throng of 20-something year old Yankees fans from putting the next Yankees pitching prospect on a crazy pedestal before he proves anything at the big leage level.

There's a whole generation of Yankees fans out there now who did not experience guys like Mike Griffin, Sam Militello, Gene Nelson, Gil Patterson, etc.

They haven't lived through seeing the next, great, young, Yankees pitching hope going bust. Maybe this is where they learn...and then are better suited to not count their chickens before they are hatched...in the future?

This is not to say that you can't love a young pitcher...it's just that you should wait and see him have some consistent success at the big league level...like Joba's doing now. If you want to crown someone, it makes much more sense to see him prove something, again, consistently, in the majors.

And, FWIW, if Hughes and/or Kennedy do that at the big league level, I'll sing songs of their glory...but, I'm going to wait before I start going too crazy...because I've seen so many fail in the past.

The mania over Hughes' number, like his ridiculous blog and the anointing of Ian Kennedy as "IPK," will be remembered in a future age alongside the crowning of the Mets' "Generation K" in the annals of over-the-top fan/PR Department lunacy.
