I would trade melky or farnsworth. Do not laugh, farnsworth’s trade value is as high as it will ever be.

Hughes may not be the premier talent he was purported to be, but if he can slide into a #3 type, that would be great. While Salty was a great prospect, Atlanta gave him up… that always raises a red flag for me.. if ATL gives away someone.. have to tread carefully… i know they had McAnn but they jettisoned Salty a little early (or maybe when his value was at the highest .. aka Andy Marte). Also, we have a couple of catchers that are coming up and may be ready in 3 years, i think we need a servicable stop-gap… so lets hold onto Hughes

In general that’s true but you can’t operate on that premise alone. The key for me is that the Yanks would be selling low on Hughes. The team owes it to itself to see his development through to the end. Atlanta also traded a couple of other players in that deal, at least one of whom (Neftali Perez) I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted back.

There’s no doubt that the Braves have done a good job over the years but you can’t take a reverential tone with them and avoid trading for ex-Braves. Don’t forget, they weren’t just dumping Salty, they were trading him for Mark Teixeira who isn’t exactly a nobody.

He hasn’t come any closer to league average than Melky has. Why bother?
