Exactly, Steve. His SLG went way down after that – we’ll see if the homer was a sign of improvement or just an isolated event. But he started the season strong, got hurt and pitchers started pounding him inside and he kept rolling balls over to the right side.

I don’t think you can take Bay’s power out of the lineup. What I think could happen though is a trade of Coco, and Giles becoming the fourth outfielder. Drew can replace Ellsbury when necessary and Giles can slot into either corner when he plays. I have to admit I was a little surprised to see his near .400 OBP. That would do a nice job of extending the lineup, potentially.

Ellsbury has not been the same since he strained his right wrist on June 5th, IIRC, has he?

And I’ll guarantee that he won’t get Ellsbury’s spot. They might have dropped him down in the lineup, they aren’t dropping him off the roster.

I meant temporarily. If Giles were to be traded to the Sox, I don’t see Tito letting him rot on the bench.

Then again, I guess they can put Ellsbury in CF, and have him flanked by Giles & Drew.

Well, first of all its a waiver claim – so probably the Rays were trying to get him and the Sox blocked it(?). My guess is that after they put in the claim, they said to themselves that maybe Giles can help, let’s see if we can swing something. Since Giles has the Red Sox on his limited no-trade list, he’d probably require that his option be picked up to waive it, and there’s no way Theo would want him for next year.

And I’ll guarantee that he won’t get Ellsbury’s spot. They might have dropped him down in the lineup, they aren’t dropping him off the roster. Heck, hitting his first homer in forever, and off a lefty, there might be hope that his bat is coming around.

Saw that @ Bronx Banter. I am surprised that Giles passed through so many teams.

Ortiz’s wrist could be bothering him, or this could be a bit of gamesmanship on Theo’s part. I suspect if the Padres dump Giles (and Giles doesn’t veto the trade), he’ll get Ellsbury’s spot on the roster.
