    Jon Heyman has the story.

It will be interesting to see who helps his team more this season: Carl Pavano in New York or Freddy Garcia in Detroit. Let the race begin!

Hey, speaking of Pavano…here’s a thought. Suppose that “Lucy van Pelt” actually shows that he can pitch…and the Yankees are out of it by August 25th (or so). Should New York look to trade Pavano before September 1st to a contender? Hey, if they can get something in return, why not? It would be in Pavano’s best interest to pitch, somewhere, too, no?

I’m all for it but I doubt they would get anything useful for him. Still it’s worth a shot, you never know what you might get.

How far out of the wild card would they have to be though to consider themselves out of it? I’d say 8 or more games. Anything less than that I think they would still think they have some chance to make it, even though it would be unlikely. This is assuming the bum actually stays healthy and pitches decent.

Thanks – good luck to them with him. I’m not very impressed with Byrd.

Neither am I, but I guess he’s protection for Wakefield and potentially if Colon isn’t ready to replace Buchholz, he could step in there, too. He can’t do what Wakefield has been doing but he can’t be any worse than Clay.

Me either but this move is being applauded by some Red Sox fans because I guess he is 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA since the All-Star Break, against the Angels, Tigers, Twins, and Blue Jays. His last game against Toronto he pitched a CG.

I figure at best Byrd = Wakefield though.

Trading Pavano? No way, the draft picks are the Yankees’ alone! They had to suffer of 4 years of this garbage, let them collect on it. And trust me, Pavano will suffer from the AJ Burnett syndrome. He will pitch lights out for a new contract and makes sure he stays up in the majors until the last day of the season. If Cashman doesn’t want Washburn , then go with Pavano.

Garcia took an easy way out didn’t he? The Tigers are not contending so this is a low pressure situation for him. He did well enough in the 2005 playoffs/WS to be considered a winner but went for the no contention situation. Credit goes to Dombrowski and Illich who are really out of contention. They could lay down and let the rest of the year go by the wayside BUT they now have the second largest payroll. They don’t want all their money and moves to go for naught.

Even so, I doubt that he will be of much help to the Tiggers this year. Actually, I don’t think he’ll be of much help to a contending team this year.

anyone know if Freddy is still out there with his sign? I don’t remember seeing him in a while so I assume no…

I highly doubt they would get any draft picks out of pavano…he hasn’t played…I’m not sure how the compensation goes, but I assumed it was comparing the player to his peers and whether he was in the top percentile, and surely whatever starts pavano can make won’t be enough to qualify to be a “top pitcher”…

i wonder why him and hughes don’t get compared more often…clay through a no-no, hughes was throwing a no-no when he got hurt, both are or in hughes’ case were under performing, young…

sure did, if he does bad in detroit nobody will notice but if he does bad here, everyone will know. I for sure thought the yanks would get him, he seem like cashmans “type”

Pavano won’t net any picks, he’s not going to be a Type A or B free agent- you have to pitch to do that.

Raf, I don’t think that the Tigers are really in contention. BUT Garcia is going to pitch his heart out to get another contract. Corey, everyone will notice Garcia whether he is on the Tigers or not. There is a dearth of starting pitching and GMs are already scouting who will fit their team for next year. Also remember that Detroit was predicted to be the AL rep for the AL by some pundits AND it is the team with the second highest payroll in baseball after the Yankees. Garcia is not flying under the radar in Detroit but rather pitching for his next contract in a non playoff situation.

The bottomline line for Pavano is whether he is a B free agent or not is that his current value is at a premium to the Yankees. The Yankees need a starter with the Joba injury and the non Washburn signing. What they could get back for him in a trade is worthless relative to his potential contribution is to the Yankees. Even though I have to see it to believe it, Pavano will be up in the Bronx this season. Believe it or not……maybe not!

I don’t think they’re in contention either. Having said that, Garcia signed a MiL deal, which becomes a ML deal if/when he gets the call. AND it’s only good until the end of the year. Personally, if he doesn’t have his arm strength back yet, I don’t see him hitting the majors this season. He’s facing game competition this year, and gets an invite to spring training somewhere next year.
