~~Steve, I’m surprised you didn’t use this as an indictment of Cashman’s construction of the roster. ~~

Ah, com'on Johnny. Then people would just call me a Cashman basher! ;-)

It was the 8th inning. You know Nathan’s pitching the 9th with a lead of any sort. Going for 1 run woulda made sense if we had been able to get anyone on base against Slowey. Not with 3 outs to go before a lights out closer.
_______________________________________________

You but them over and there is one out with a guy on second and third...base hit scores two that makes it 4-3 and you inning goes on...plus there's always a chance the Twins misplay the bunt...or they walk Damon to load the bases and try to get a double play...it completely changes the game and forces the Twins to make a decision because the Yankees are being aggressive... but with Sexson going for the 3-run HR and striking out, you waste the out and give the advantage back to the Twins

That said, if Matsui and Posada hadn't gone down and Cano had hit like it was 2006, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Still, it's a matter of offensive philosophy married to the excessive age of the team's key hitters.

Steve, I'm surprised you didn't use this as an indictment of Cashman's construction of the roster. Because I think here you have a strong case. Girardi is allegedly an NL, aggressive offense type of manager but you can't have him run that offense with Torre's station-to-station OBP/3 run homer line-up. Mike Sciosia couldn't succeed with the line-up we have. Few of the Yankees can execute a bunt, a hit-and-run, or reliably put the ball in play. They are "mechanics" guys who want to load up and hit pitches in their hot zones...all the time. Hard to do against good pitching.

The Yankees have now scored a total of 580 runs in 121 games. That puts them on a pace to finish the season with about 777 runs, or about 200 fewer runs than last year. And last year the Orioles scored 756 runs en route to 93 losses, so you can see where this might be going. Maybe part of the problem is that Girardi is running a big inning offense without a big inning line-up?
______________________________________________

Matsui and Posada are probably good for 190 RBI in a season, so that could be part of the 200 run difference, combined with bad seasons from Jeter, Cano, and Melky.

I think Girardi proved he is going for the big inning yesterday by having Sexson pinch hit for Melky with 1st and 2nd nobody out instead of bunting. He was looking for the 3-run HR. I thought that was a bad move considering Sexson is literally hit or miss and most likely would strike out, which he did.

Just a side note, but the Yanks are only two games up on the Blue Jays. It's possible this team could finish in 4th.

The Yankees are 2-5 against LAA, and 62-52 against everyone else. That sounds much better.

I thought that there’d be more of an aggressive style of play, maybe more hitting and running, stealing, and whatnot. Of course, they could’ve been doing this all along, I’m just going off the top of my head without looking @ the numbers.

-

It looks like Jeter and Abreu have been stealing noticably less (just roughly projecting the numbers out to full season). Damon's been all over the map in different seasons, but I'd guess he'll end up on the low end of an average season. A-Rod's probably below average, too. Giambi's right on schedule, though.

Yeah, Joe could get a few of them to play old skool pre Bill James/Moneyball ball, but is Arod being paid 30 mill to suicide squeeze?
----------
You don't need him to suicide squeeze, but you look at antone's previous entry;

***Perfect example from today…8th inning 1st and 2nd no outs…down 3…9th hitter up…shouldn’t they bunt there?…Instead, Sexson strikes out…***

and you'd have to wonder...
